A copper-alloy probable finger ring of late Iron Age or early Roman date, about 200 BC - AD 200. The finger ring has been made from a cast rod/wire of copper alloy, circular in section, 3.4mm in diameter. The rod has been bent to form a penannular ring with overlapping terminals. One terminal is decorated with three circumferential grooves forming a double collar, but the other is not decorated suggesting it may be broken. Originally, the ring may have had more coils like a 'snake ring'. The ring has a dark green / turquoise patina and is slightly pitted. Compare WILT-5BA843and KEN…

A fragment of a silver finger ring of Roman date. Only one shoulder of the ring survives. It is flat, rectangular in section, and shaped like a figure of eight. The shoulder is decorated with a single groove running along the centre from the edge of the bezel to the hoop. The hoop thickens slightly before it is broken, making it more oval in section. The metal has a grey colour, with spots of green corrosion, probably from a nearby object. The breaks are worn. As the object is made of silver and is more than 300 years old, it meets the requirements of the 1996 Treasure Act.

There are two narrow, flat rectangular shoulders with slightly rounded corners that step up into the flat bezel. The bezel is rectangular and set transversely to the hoop. It has an incuse rectangular setting that would have held a stone. The ring has a light green patina. It is 28.8mm long, 12.7mm wide and …

A copper alloy Roman finger ring dating from the 2nd to early 3rd century. It is complete and has a circular bezel which is stepped so it is raised in the centre. Two further transverse grooves mark the start of the shoulder on each side. The upper hoop is rectangular in section, tapering to a D shaped oval at the back of the hoop. The patina is a dull grey and very smooth, probably suggesting a high white metal content. Small areas of green corrosion indicate t…

A copper alloy Roman finger ring with the back of the hoop missing. It dates from the 3rd century. It has a raised oval bezel and angular keeled shoulders. The bezel is decorated with a longitudinal groove which in the oval setting with rounded edges has a suggestion of a vulva, similar to vulvate mounts such as HAMP-CF2DC7. The shoulders are concave and the upper parts of the hoop are thickened. The hoop tapers towards the rear and is D shaped in section at the breaks. These are worn and patinated. The ring has a olive green patina with some pitting. Compare SF-F7EF96 which has simil…

A silver Medieval "fede" type finger ring which is inscribed on the outside of the hoop. The inscription is difficult to read because of damage, but appears to read: "C' IL (M)RONE(WH)•IALEALA". The bezel is in the form of clasped hands but has been twisted and bent inwards and the hoop is broken. The rest of the hoop is rectangular in section and fairly crude. Lovers' 'Fede' type rings are well known and a number of complete and fragmentary examples have been recorded under the Treasure Act (eg 2007 T49; 2007 T107; 2007 T342; and 2010 T158).Co…

A late Medieval finger ring with a bezel that could be used as a seal matrix. It is copper alloy and has a hoop which is D shaped in section. This flares to form the flat oval bezel. The design is recessed and is of a letter V with a crown above it. This is a type of design that became very popular on 15th century signet rings (Harvey and McGuiness, page 93). The metal is slightly corroded and has a dark green to black patina.

Description: A complete 16th or 17th century gold finger ring. The ring is cast so that the hoop is formed from sixteen domes or hemispheres, i.e. it has a semicircular section. One dome is elongated and probably acted as the bezel. The inner surface of the hoop is inscribed with the legend " * ALWAYES ONE >>>". Treasure case: 2012 T53 Description: Post-Medieval gold plated finger-ring. Exterior of ring is decorated with three horizontal rows of bosses, interior plain. Discussion: This is a puzzling ring for which we have found no parallels. The closest example in the British Museum collections is 1956,1014.1, which has diagonal rows of bosses creating a similar effect with a double row of capital letter inscription in English on the interior, the lettering consistent with a dating of 16th - 17th century. However the structure of this ring is different, it appears to be a layer of gold o…
