Part of a cast, copper alloy Anglo-Saxon brooch of small long type, dating from AD400-600. It consists of an arched bow and a small, flat, head plate with three equidistantly spaced arms which taper to blunt, rounded points, possible zoomorphic but too worn to be sure. On the underside of the head plate are the remains of a vertical pin loop. The pin and the foot of the brooch are both missing, having broken away in antiquity. The brooch is quite corroded and no decoration is visible. It has a rough, patchy light green patina. It is 33.1mm long, 20.7mm wide and 11mm thick. It weighs 7…

Part of the foot from a cast, copper alloy, Saxon brooch, probably of the cruciform type, dating from AD450-650. The remaining section is rectangular, flaring slightly towards the foot. There is a raised design consisting of a central, longitudinal ridge dividing into two U-shaped arms at the lower end, each U-shape thus formed containing a large pellet. The upper end of this ridge is also connected to a pellet, the whole, if inverted, giving the impression of a human face. Beneath this design are three raised bands, two broad and one narrow, separated by transverse grooves. There is …

Part of a copper alloy Roman headstud brooch dating from 75 - 200 AD. Only the head and upper bow survives. The brooch has rectangular wings with the remains of a loop on the back which would have held the now missing pin mechanism. Possibly part of a copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch dating from 75 - 175 AD. Only the button and the lower bow survives. The upper bow is circular in section and curves backwards before the worn and patinated break. The acanthus button is just a plain projecting disc which extends right round the bow. Below it is a bulbous moulding on the front of the bow. The lower bow is D shaped in section and tapers to a point where the foot is missing. It is quite corroded, but there is no evidence of a catchplate, casting doubt on the identification as a brooch.

Description: Part of a Medieval probable annular brooch, of which over half of the frame survives. The pin is missing. There was probably a constriction to house the pin on the missing part of the frame. The frame looks to have been roughly oval in shape and at one side it has a projection which tapers to a point and terminates in a trefoil shaped knop. The front of the frame is inscribed with lombardic letters reading: "[...]IC'(IBI)DE'IM'E'SRE[...]". The significance of this is unclear. The brooch probably dates from the 13th to early 14th century. Consequently, in terms of age …
