Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete medieval copper-alloy annular buckle (dating from the 14th century). The frame consists of a ring of sub square section measuring 16.99mm diameter by 2.62mm thick. The wire pin is circular in section and has been looped round the frame and there is no pin rest. The artefact has therefore been recorded as a buckle rather than a brooch (see Egan and Pritchard 1991, 57). Many examples of annular buckles have been found in London in 14th-century contexts (ibid., 57-58; fig. 36). The buckle has a dark-brown patina.

A group of fifteen smooth and rounded stone pebbles which could have been used as gaming counters. They vary in colour from grey through buff to pink. They were all found in one area of one field, but it remains a possibility that they are a natural river gravel deposit. The site is a known Early Medieval one, so if they are archaeological, an Early Medieval date is suggested.

An incomplete copper alloy Medieval strap end with a sheet spacer probably dating from 1270 - 1350 AD. It is sub-rectangular with broken ends which are both patinated and rounded. The strap end is formed from two plates and a sheet spacer between. The sheet spacer stops before the attachment end to leave space for the strap.
