Object type: OYSTER SHELL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of shell, probably oyster, measuring 52.06mm in length, 47.79mm in width and 3.23 in thickness. The shell is mostly complete with the edges and a small portion of the bottom absent. The breaks are not recent. It is good, stable condition, although the upper layers of the outer surface are missing. There is no alteration made to the shell and so it is very hard to date. Thus, the shell probably dates between AD 43 and 1900. See find SWYOR-80D882 for another example.

An incomplete piece of probably oyster shell. It measures 31.24mm wide, 46.05 long and 3.81mm deep and weighing 8.43 grams. The shell is broken on three sides, with the right and left sides broken almost perfectly vertically, although this may be a natural occurrence. None of the breaks appear to be recent. The shell is in fair condition, and it is not flaking, although the upper layers of the outer surface are missing and appear to have flaked off in the past. Shell is difficult to date and as such a date of AD 43 to 1900 is assigned. See find SWYOR-80D882 for another example.

A complete cast lead alloy probable line weight of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval (1st to 17th Centuries AD). The weight is sub-spherical in shape. The central hole is broadly circular and is positioned centrally. The internal diameter measures 3.9mm. This would seem too small for the object to be a spindle whorl. It is mid to light grey colour, with an even patina. It has signs of being abraded and rolled in the plough soil. This type of weight has been in use for a long period of time and can have multiple functions or uses, particularly for weighting lines used on …

A fossilised shell (probably Gryphaea, commonly known as a Devil's Toenail), dating from the Jurassic period. The fossil may have been curated during in an archaeological period, or may be naturally occurring. They are so common near Scunthorpe, that they appear on the town's arms. In the 17th and 18th centuries, they were believed to be a cure for arthritic joints.

A small copper alloy harness ring which probably dates from the medieval or post medieval period (Geake 2001). Very functional objects like this are difficult to date since their design does not change. It is circular in shape, with hexagonal section. There is no visible wear, and there are file marks. For a similar example see SWYOR-8F2123.The patina is grey suggesting a high tin content.

A sherd from a hand made (not wheel-thrown) ceramic vessel of unknown date. The sherd is a wall sherd and is strongly curved, suggesting it is from a small globular vessel. The striations in the clay are not uni-directinal as in wheel thrown pots, and instead, there are deep finger marks showing where clay has been pushed, perhaps into a mould? The outer face is very smooth but has small flat areas. The reverse is uneven and wiped in different directions. There appear to be two layers of clay forming the wall of the vessel. The fabric is hard and has fine but worn breaks. The surface …

Two stone cobbles which are heat altered and shaped. Both are rounded cobbles which have one face worn or shaped to be flat. One stone is complete. It is dense and well consolidated with many mica particles. Originally a yellow grey colour, pink discolouration suggests heating. The flat surface looks to have been pecked rather than cut or ground. It is 80.52mm long, 60.4mm wide and 33.14mm thick. It weighs 222g. The other stone is broken with a jagged, irregular break. One face is rounded, the original cobble, and the other is ground flat. The stone is dense and well consoli…

They are constructed from a thick strip of copper alloy sheet, folded in the centre to create a rounded suspension loop, and have a pair of blades tapering outwards to slightly flared ends. A copper alloy probable pendant or bead of unknown date. The object is an elongated oval of copper alloy, rectangular in section but with rounded edges. The surfaces are very smooth and patinated to a dark brown colour, but do not appear to have been decorated. At one end is a (possibly drilled) circular hole which is worn at one side suggesting the object was suspended from the hole. No close parallel has been found, but there are some similarities with SWYOR-6D5135 and WAW-35A745. The finder suggests it could be a bead spacer.

An unidentified cast copper alloy artefact. Both ends are well worn breaks and not enough survives to be able to deduce the original shape. It consists of two circles of metal, one slightly larger than the other, joined together by a narrow, flat section of metal. Although they are cast in one piece, the casting has been made such that they appear to be constructed of a single strip of metal that has been coiled to make the circles, at least on one face. This illusion is continued on the larger of the circles as the 'coil' continues into a curved, tapering length of metal, now br…
