Knapped flint implement. In shape and forming technique it appears similar Mesolithic - Early Neolithic picks although it is much smaller. It is also similar to the Mesolithic tooks known as fabricators and it was probably used to dig small holes or to work wood. It is 67.4mm long, 25.3mm wide, 16.3mm thick and weighs 29.7 grams. The implement was produced from a much larger flake that has been extensively reworked, possibly several times. There is extensive blunting, low angle, stepped retouch at the proximal end, extending two fifths of the way down the sides. The distal half has b…

Flint axe. Probable tranchet axe of Late Mesolithic date. Long, oval flaked axe with an oval cross section. Off-white flint with a heavy patina and orange iron staining. This object was unearthed many years ago and has been curated by the owners, hence its yellow-brown "mantlepiece" patina. The butt of the axe is tapered almost to a point. The axe is extensively flaked along both edges. The flakes are broad. The cutting edge is formed by similar broad flaking. The diagnostic transverse flake of a tranchet axe has been obscured by subsequent flaking or re-working. However, the overall …

A flint microlith of probable late Mesolithic date. Microliths were probably early forms of arrowhead, several being hafted to produce the arrow. Part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The tool is sub-rectangular in plan and of semi-circular section. The bottom edge, which would have been fitted into the arrow shaft, has been invasively re-touched, creating a blunt face. The narrow front edge is convex and the unworked top edge is parallel to the blunted underside. At the distal end of the bottom edge, the side extends into a hook-like projection, which p…

These pieces are part of a large assemblage of Mesolithic to Bronze Age flintwork*. The Neolithic blades are of varying forms but are mostly parallel sided or converge slightly at one end. The dorsal surfaces generally exhibit three or four parallel flake removal scars, creating a trapezoidal profile. Most of the blades have serrated edges, which may be the result of re-touch, but is more likely (except, perhaps, in the case of…

Seven of the pieces (nos. 37, 38, 39, 41, 43, 44 and 46) are categorised as re-touched flakes. Most are sub-oval to sub-rectangular in plan, have vertical arrises and blade removal scars on the dorsal surfaces, plus a limited amount of mostly non-invasive re-touch to one edge. No. 44 has a deliberately serrated vertical edge, possibly indicating that it performed a saw-like function; no. 38 has a cut notch, as does no. 46. The …
