A complete gold finger ring of probably Post Medieval to Modern date consisting of a simple hoop with a D shaped section. The outer face is decorated with six pairs of transverse grooves which are V shaped in section. The inner face is bevelled along one edge. There are no maker's marks or hallmarks making the ring very difficult to date. Discussion: This finger ring is fairly undiagnostic though a Post Medieval to Modern date seems most likely. It is impossible to certify that it was deposited prior to 1712 as stipulated in the 1996 Treasure Act, thus it should not be regarded as T…

Early Anglo-Saxon thick silver object set with a panel of cloisonné garnets with gold cell walls. Description: Sub-triangular three-dimensional object made from cast silver, with all edges curved (two concave and one convex). When held with the convex edge downwards, the object is curved in cross-section from side to side; the reverse is flatter, but has a C-shaped raised area following the convex edge with a sunken C-shaped centre which is part of the original casting. The effect is that of a horse's hoof. There is no obvious break, but there is an oval scar on top of the apex…

Description: Gold and cloisonné garnet object. The original form of the object is hard to reconstruct, as it is now bent and broken, with four pieces surviving; some areas are still in places obscured by soil. The main decorative motif is a central circular panel 20-21mm in diameter, constructed on a backplate with a ring of cloisonné around the edge and an empty circle 14mm in diameter in the centre. The backplate is pierced by two small relatively neat circular holes and two more ragged and irregular holes, all of which are pushed through from the front and none of which are in th…

TREASURE CASE : 2012 T431 A small lump of gold of uncertain date. The object is sub-circular in plan with a D-shaped section and smooth rounded edges. It is likely to be casting waste. Date: Unknown Dimensions: Diameter: 14.4mm; Thickness: 4.4mm; Weight 5.3g. Discussion: Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find, and despite it containing a minimum of 10% precious metal, it cannot be securely dated to pre-1712 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Description: A bent gold finger ring engraved with a heart with crossed arrows on each side flanked by scrolling foliage. The band is D-shaped in section and the inside bears the inscription 'Kindly take this for my sake' followed by a stamped IY (or IV). Discussion: See ring in the British Museum collections, 1961,1202.116, for a ring with the same mark, probably that of John Young entered in 1760 and in use until at least 1793. The find dates to later than 1712 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Working treasure report: A complete gold Medieval finger-ring, with an oval bezel set with a blue stone, possibly sapphire. The hoop of the ring is circular in cross section: the shoulders are broader and taper into a thin band. Either side of the bezel is a narrow transverse ridge. The ring is in good condition, the only defect being that the hoop is slightly bent out of shape. A very similar ring has been found in Kington St Michael, Wiltshire and can be found in the Treasure Annual Report 2003, pg. 102, no. 169. The ring is typical of the late 12th or 13th century

A 7th-century Early Medieval gold coin; a thrymsa of the York Group (dating from 640 - 660 AD), of a new type classified as type D. The obverse resembles a standing figure facing forward holding a cross in each hand. The reverse has a central cross with flaring limbs and a lozenge in the centre. The cross is within a circle. Instead of a legend, the coin has four cross pommees arranged alternately with pairs of open triangles facing each other (runic 'd') to form an hourglass of figure or eight on its side.
