An incomplete Medieval (1200-1300) gold finger-ring with a broken (but probably complete) loop, missing its setting. Both bezel and loop are rather squashed. The bezel is biconical in shape and measures 7.79x7.58x6.35mm. It is filled with earth, presumably occupying the space once filled with a gem or glass setting. The gold wire hoop is circular in cross-section (diameter 0.97mm) at the back of the hoop, becoming rather more triangular in cross-section close to the bezel (1.7x1.5mm). A very worn, clipped and damaged earlier 17th-century gold post-medieval halfcrown of James I, London mint (1615-1616 AD; North 2095). This coin has been bent and torn as a result of old damage. It has been pierced through the obverse between the inner circle and the bust at around 9 o'clock. The hole is at around 10 o'clock on the reverse. The coin has been examined by the British Museum and, despite the piercing, it was not considered an item of potential Treasure (pers. comm. 8th May 2012).

Circumstances of discovery On 22nd October 2011 a single gold coin was discovered by metal detector users near Chawton in Hampshire. A further 104 gold coins were discovered on the same spot between 10th December 2011 and 7th January 2012. The coins were reported to Rob Webley, Hampshire FLO, and delivered to the British Museum on 8th March 2012.
