British Iron Age gold quarter stater, uninscribed Eastern series (attributed to Trinovantes). 'British G' type, ABC (Cottam et al 2010) 2350 = BMC (Hobbs 1996) 192. Note: Hobbs incorrectly identified this type as the quarter stater linked to the North Eastern gold stater 'British H', rather than the Eastern quarter 'British G' (or 'Clacton' type).

The find comprises a 'Gallo-Belgic' Aa class 4 gold quarter stater (cf Sills 2003 279, p.132[1]). Diameter: 14.1mm; thickness: 0.9mm; weight: 1.82g. The flan of the coin is slightly bent. Coins of this type were struck in the Somme valley area of N.W. France in the mid-2nd century BC. They are traditionally attributed to the Ambiani but are more commonly found in Essex and Kent; it has been suggested that this particular type was made for export to Britain. The above coin is clearly more than 300 years old. It is struck from a metal alloy well above the 10% precious metal thresh…

This coin is a pseudo-Imperial tremissis of the late 6th or very early 7th century, probably of Frankish manufacture. This coin is a Merovingian tremissis of the mint-and moneyer type, of the period AD 580-670. The reverse inscription is illegible, but the obverse inscription shows that it was minted in, or possibly imitating, the town of Quentovic (Etaples, Pas-de-Calais). Quentovic was a major mint, and a major port, and finds from Quentovic are not unusual as finds in England, but the crude style makes it possible that this is a contemporary imitation minted elsewhere.
