Object type: PIPE TAMPER
Broad period: MODERN

An in complete, copper alloy, Modern Pipe Tamper/Stopper depicting George and Dragon. The object comprises a small rendition of an upright St. George in plate armour, thrusting his spear into a defeated dragon. The object is the decorative element from a pipe tamper or stopper.
Dr. Susie White (FLO) comments "it is a George and the Dragon pipe stopper (tamper) as illustrated in Leslie 2012, Plate 388 on page 276. These are brass stoppers and are particularly late and probably 19th century, many being produced around the time of the Great Exhibition in 1851."
