A cast copper-alloy harness pendant of Medieval date, probably c. 1200-1300. The pendant is largely complete, missing a portion of the very worn suspension loop. The pendant is sub-square in plan with a thick outer edge with moulded notches, creating a wavy, beaded effect. The field is sunken, of 3-4mm depth, with a central, domed square boss. Most of the field retains a veneer of blue enamel, less than 1mm in thickness. The reverse is undecorated. The suspension loop emerges from the centre of the upper edge. The squarish form of the pendant, use of enamel, and lack of hera…

A copper alloy medieval harness pendant dating from 1200 - 1405 AD. The pendant is shield shaped and has a blue enamel background covered with fleur de lis. The silvering or gilding of the fleurs is missing, but they were probably gilded, making this the Arms of France Ancient (Azure semy-de-lis or). DUR-A54350 notes Irene Szymanski's comment that: "France Ancient remained the French arms until the late 14th century when, in accordance with an edict of Charles V in 1376, the number of fleurs-de-lys was reduced to three. In fact, as coins show, the edict took some time to take effect, …

The harness pendant represents the royal arms of England from the reign of Richard I-Edward III, and probably was lost by a member of the royal guard or entourage during a visit to th…

A copper-alloy openwork harness pendant of Medieval date. The frame takes the form of an openwork quatrefoil, resembling a cross, an angled moulding located within each of the external angles. A pair of straight-sided lugs projects vertically from the top of the frame, the gap between them containing part of a second, now largely missing, element which is held in place by an axis bar and would have swung within the central void. At the apex of this second element there is a damaged loop, by which the pendant would have been suspended. A trace of gilding can be seen on the upper surf…
