A gold finger ring of a style attributable to the 14th century AD. The frame is mis-shapen but is approximately 15mm in diameter and D-shaped in section. 1.5mm wide each side of the bezel, the frame narrows towards the back and appears to have been worn thinner through use. A rectangular segment separates the frame from the bezel. This segment is 1.8mm wide and 3mm long with 5 linear grooves etched into it. The bezel is oval in plan, measuring 13mm long, 8mm wide and 3mm thick. Sitting inside the bezel is a clear stone, made of either glass or crystal but which cannot be further defin…

A medieval brooch, consisting of a hoop, triangular in section, set with a collett at the top accommodating a coloured stone and terminating in a pair of clasped hands. The hands were designed to hold a stone, probably a pearl, which has now perished. The two registers formed by the triangular sections are engraved with letters that read + PAR CEST PRESENT M VERWSRENTENS (By/with this present.....) The meaning of this (rhyming?) French inscription is unclear but it almost certainly signifies a gift between two lovers. The brooch is gold and dates from the thirteenth century. …
