RIC IV, Pt II, p. 84, no. 176. There is a crescental cut out on the circumference of the coin. A contemporary plated copy of a denarius of Severus Alexander dating to the period AD 222 to 238 (Reece period 11). The reverse appears to show Mars advancing right with transverse spear. However, the legend [...]NA [....]A does not fit with such a reverse type and it is possible that the coin is amalgam of several types. The coin has two, merged crescental cut-outs on its circumference. These do not appear to be worn piercings intended for suspension. Such cut-outs appear on several coins from the same deposit, suggesting that this may be a ritual action.
