A circular copper alloy mount or possible pendant ornament of possible Early Early-Medieval date (c.500-750), with an openwork triskele design at the centre, each arm supported by a narrow projection from the surround. At the cetre of the triskele is a small circular depression. The object measures 64mm in diameter and varies in thickness between 0.8mm and 1.2mm, being thickest at the centre and thinning towards the edges, which are slightly convex from the front and concave from the back. Object type: BELL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small iron hand-bell plated with copper-alloy using the 'fusion-plating process' (Bourke 1980; 1983). The bell is corroded but appears to be made from a single piece of iron that has been folded in two; the seam, which is located to the side, is now open and was presumably once riveted together. The bell has pulled shoulders, which results in a very narrow apex. In plan the bell is sub-oval. A ring was set in the top of the bell which served both as a handle and for a suspension of the clapper. The former is evidenced by two small knobs of iron at the apex; the latter is perhaps …

An incomplete Late Early-Medieval (1000-1100) copper alloy possible harness pendant, in the style of a stirrup strap-mount of Williams' Class A Type 12, openwork version, but with a knop at the apex instead of a loop (rendering it useless as a stirrup strap-mount). It is broken at the end opposite to this (old break), where the flange of a stirrup strap-mount would extend (or the lugs for an axis bar if a harness pendant). Measures 37.45x34.70x3.77mm and weighs 9.89g. The diamond-shaped object features seven circular bosses positioned at the junctions of cross and frame. The frame a…

Lead probable weight. Cast globular object with a rounded base and a neat concave depression in its top of diameter 9.5mm and maximum depth 2.5mm, this surface of this feature is smooth and mid grey in colour, and its appearance recalls that of small weights with objects embedded in them. The mass may relate this object to the Scandinavian unit of 4.07gms, in which case this object could represent five such units. This is, however, an uncommon value in that putative series. Additionally, if an embedded object has been lost, this would necessarily vitiate this calculation. Suggested da…

Two circular rivet holes are visible at the end of this artefact where this plate would have attached to a secondary lower plate; the attachment end is absent. Red brown corrosion remains around these two holes on the upper surface suggesting that these rivets might have been made in iron; this artefact has a green colour overall. The body of the plate is decorated with a series of punched dot and circle detail o…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy stirrup terminal of Early Medieval date. It is globular in form and has a faceted foot but there is no upward shaft as this is missing due to old breaks. The terminal is hollow, making it U-shaped in section to fit on the diagonal arm of the lower part of a stirrup. There is iron residue on the base which is consistant with the foot plate of the stirrup. There is a circular hole in the base of the terminal which is unusual and may be a later modification. It measures 17.21mm in diameter, 15.64mm in height, 3.24mm in thickness and weighs 10.99g. Simila…
