An almost complete copper-alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 4.i1. Plate 47, dating from the late first to second century AD. The brooch is well cast with moulded decoration which runs down the length of the bow. The decoration takes the form of a central vertical rib with a thin groove either side and approximately 16 equally spaced horizontal rectangular ribs either side. The bottom of the bow terminates in a triple collared knop, above which there is a groove and then a further thin collar. A sub-triangular cat…

A side variant scraper, brown and grey in colour, which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently manufactured. The left margin of the dorsal face exhibits continuous retouch with a semi-abrupt angle and is of edge type extent. The retouch morphology is of sub-parallel type. A broken and incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type), Mackreth 2011, 4.b-4c, Plate 46, dating from the late first to second century AD. The semi-cylindrical wings are open at the reverse for the pin mechanism which was probably sprung but which is now missing. The ends of the wings are pierced to hold the spring bar. A rearward projecting lug at the top would have secured the spring cord. There are moulded plates on the side of the head, a characteristic feature of brooches of this type. A decorative r…

A group of nine objects from the same field, though not necessarily deposited together, two certainly and the rest probably of Early Medieval date. 1) A 9th - early 10th century silver, Anglo-Saxon strap end (incomplete). The strap end is broken at both ends, but the central panel containing a Trewhiddle style animal on a niello ground is present. It is 21.08mm long, 10.75mm wide and 1.47mm thick. It weighs 1.54g. A group of five objects from the same field, though not necessarily deposited together, all of probably Early Medieval date. All five objects are fragments of waste silver, probably evidence of silver working. They are undecorated and have no dating evidence themselves, but are from a known Early Medieval productive site. There is one larger piece of thick plate (15.34mm long, 12.41mm wide and 5.63mm thick, 5.33g) with all the edges broken. There are two tiny rounded fragments - perhaps flattened drops of silver, and two fragments of thin sheet, also with all edges broken. Compare S…

A silver plate probably from a strap end of Early Medieval date. The plate is rectangular but with one corner broken off and damage to the middle of the other long edge. The upper face is plain, but on the reverse are slight marks where there have been rivets; one in a corner, and two at the other end near the corners, but further from the short edge. There is also a roughened patch in the centre. The plate is difficult to date, but as it is from an Early Medieval productive site, an Early Medieval date is suggested. As it is probably more than 300 years old, and made of silver, it…

An awl, dark grey in colour, which has been bifacially retouched and expediently made. A notch has been created on the left margin close to the proximal end of the dorsal face with the proximal end itself having been retouched close to the intersect with the left margin to enhance awl functionality. This retouch has been carried out in a similar fashion on the ventral face to further improve function. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on p143, fig5.129, F153 which dates to the Late Neolithic.

A copper-alloy artefact, the form of which suggests it may be a Roman stylus. The object has a circular-sectioned shaft which has become bent and has probably been broken off, with the point now missing. At the other end, the shaft flares into a flat triangular eraser. This has a squared-off end and is decorated near its base by a pair of transverse grooves. The object measures 60.9mm long, up to 7.1mm wide (base) and 2.5mm thick (shaft). The weight is 2.24g.

A copper alloy (bronze) farthing of George V. The coin has been pierced to form a pendant for suspension, possibly on a necklace or more likely on a fob watch. Further, the coin has been deliberately drilled, cut and filed to create a profile of the king. This work is very fine and the filing is extraordinarily neat, following the profile of the face and back of the head as well as the internal line which divides the inscription from the field. This design completely ignores the reverse of Britannia seated. The date of the coin (191[?]) and the wear suggests that it had been in circul…
