Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
A silver-gilt object, probably a dress-hook or eye (Treasure ref. 2012 T381). The object is cross-shaped, having a circular loop at the top and a scroll-shaped arm curving outwards from the body. At the top of both arms is a small loop. The body expands to a tear-drop shap with a moulded rib on the top. The tear-drop terminates with a collared fleur-de-lis, but it is unclear whether this is incomplete; a hook may have extended from it suggesting it was a hook-piece, however if no hook extended it is probably an eyelet-piece. The reverse is flat and decorated on the central body with h…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper alloy pin dating from the Medieval period. It has a circular head created by winding five turns of copper wire around the upper end of the shaft, giving the head a grooved appearance. The shaft is narrow and of the same diameter for much of its length, tapering only to a point at the end. As is often the case with these pins, it is bent in the middle of the shaft. The total length of the shaft is 72.6mm; the head is 6.8mm in diameter. The pin weighs 2.87gm.
Pins of similar construction are illustrated in Egan & Pritchard, 1991, Dress Accessories c1150-c1450, page 301.

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Copper-alloy mount with separate ring, probably a fitting from a 16th- or 17th-century sword belt. It consists of a long sub-triangular plate with an incurved wider top. The narrower end tapers to become oval in cross-section and is bent backwards to form a hook or loop. The ring is probably D-shaped in cross-section and swivels freely within the loop. The plate has two rivet holes set one above the other, both now filled with iron corrosion.

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Treasure case: 2012 T53
Description: Post-Medieval gold plated finger-ring. Exterior of ring is decorated with three horizontal rows of bosses, interior plain.
Discussion: This is a puzzling ring for which we have found no parallels. The closest example in the British Museum collections is 1956,1014.1, which has diagonal rows of bosses creating a similar effect with a double row of capital letter inscription in English on the interior, the lettering consistent with a dating of 16th - 17th century. However the structure of this ring is different, it appears to be a layer of gold o…

Object type: RIVET
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

A silver rivet, of uncertain date, but probably Early Medieval based on the other objects found in the same location which is a known Early Medieval productive site.

Similar copper alloy rivets of similar shape, but unknown date are YORYM-E321F1, SWYOR-A17354 and SF-A8EB38. A silver example of Early Medieval date is STAFFS-3A15A3, …

A group of five objects from the same field, though not necessarily deposited together, all of probably Early Medieval date. All five objects are fragments of waste silver, probably evidence of silver working. They are undecorated and have no dating evidence themselves, but are from a known Early Medieval productive site.
There is one larger piece of thick plate (15.34mm long, 12.41mm wide and 5.63mm thick, 5.33g) with all the edges broken. There are two tiny rounded fragments - perhaps flattened drops of silver, and two fragments of thin sheet, also with all edges broken. Compare S…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Published
A silver plate probably from a strap end of Early Medieval date. The plate is rectangular but with one corner broken off and damage to the middle of the other long edge. The upper face is plain, but on the reverse are slight marks where there have been rivets; one in a corner, and two at the other end near the corners, but further from the short edge. There is also a roughened patch in the centre. The plate is difficult to date, but as it is from an Early Medieval productive site, an Early Medieval date is suggested.
As it is probably more than 300 years old, and made of silver, it…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
A Medieval cast copper-alloy bar mount with integral loop. The mount consists of a rectangular bar which flares outwards and seperates into two, now broken, arms at one end. The arms would originally have continued to form a circular loop. There are two drilled rivet holes, one slightly off-centre at the attachment end, missing its rivet, and one in the centre at the looped end which retains its copper-alloy rivet. There are traces of gilding remaining on the upper surface.
Compare BH-A3C352, a complete example from Chrishall, Essex.
