A sheet copper alloy sword pommel, probably dating to the early-medieval period. The pommel is made from one sheet of copper alloy that has been folded from a flat rectangular base up and over into triangular profiled pommel with a rectangular cross section. The pommel is filled with a lead alloy substance, giving the object quite some weight for its size. The folds of the pommel do not quite touch each other and the lead infill has leached out. Through the centre of the pommel is the remains of an iron rivet or pin; possibly the remains of the tang but with a small diameter. Although…

A fragment of a stoneware vessel, probably a jug, with moulded decoration. The decoration comprises part of the beard from a bearded male face above a bordered cartouche containing script. The letters may be nonesense, and seem to be a retrograde E followed by W T I. The fragment comes from a type of stoneware vessel known as a Bartmann or Bellarmine jug, the bearded face thought to be lampooning Cardinal Bellarmine (1542-1621), and dates from the post-medieval period (1600-1750). The outer surface is dark brown which has been salt-glazed, producing the mottled effect. The interior i…

A Medieval to Modern cast lead circular unifaced token (c. 1250-c. 1850 AD). The token has a raised design consisting of multiple lines. Diameter: 17.24mm. Weight: 5.75g. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally. They are therefore hard to date precisely and could be Medieval to Modern in date (c. 1250-1850 AD).

A corroded cast copper-alloy medieval strap-end made of a single strip folded in half widthways. In shape it is a simple rectangular with rounded corners, some of the rounding may be from wear. There is a single rivet which appears to be cast integrally with the front and then roughly hammered flat after going through the strap and a hole in the back-plate. The flattened end of the rivet is sub square. The strip is notably thick (Th.: c. 1.9mm); this has helped result in a fracture to one side of the fold that extends up one face. The strap-end seems to have been squeezed together j…
