An incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date, only the pin bar and slight vestiges of the oval loops. The pin bar is slightly bent and square in cross section, iron corrosion is visible in places along the pin bar, presumably from the pin, which is now missing. At both ends of the pin bar is a moulded knopped protrusion.

A fragment from a cast copper-alloy probable buckle frame, possibly a single-looped example of medieval date. What exists is conceivably the outer edge with an angular protrusion at its centre, rounded at its tip. This features a low central channel which may have acted as a pin rest. This is flanked within the lipped protrusion by two finely incised lines. The rest of the outer edge is decorated with groups of incised transverse lines at either side of the lip. The outer edge is slightly curved with moulded lobed ends. These are divided from the 'sides' of the frame by transver…

A damaged and incomplete medieval composite buckle with integral hollow box plate cast in copper alloy (15th century AD). The frame is almost entirely missing apart from part of the side at the junction, bent downwards as a result of of old damage. The extant frame consists of a rectangular strip that curves out very slightly at the external side of which is an elaborate scrolled moulding with recessed areas. At the junction of frame and plate is an oval perforation; although the pin is missing one can see damage it caused pulling the thin strip beyond the perforation. The junction is…

A worn and corroded fragment of a cast copper-alloy single-looped dolphin buckle frame of late Roman date. It consists of one single dolphin head, moulded in low relief, with an open snout that has broken short of the object it would have held. It has a large circular eye formed of a punched ring-and-dot motif, and a long and low crest runs along the top of the head. The lower surface of the buckle is flat and undecorated. The buckle has corroded to a variable red-brown colour. This buckle is similar to those illustrated in Appels and Laycock (2007, 168 ff.).

A small cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of medieval to post-medieval date. The loops are sub-pentagonal in form and have neatly serrated outer edges, each with seven points. The loops are shallowly bevelled externally on the upper surface; the lower face is flat and plain. The loops angle in towards the pin bar. At one end of the latter are the corroded remains of the iron pin's loop; the rest of the pin is now missing. One of the loops has been twisted in profile. Buckles with outer edges treated in this way can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 60; particularly ref. …

A fragment from a medieval cast copper-alloy single-looped buckle frame consisting of the outer edge and the beginnings of the sides. The ornate outer edge features a pair large knops flanking a constriction for an extant sheet roller. The roller is decorated with about nine scored transverse grooves that are spaced equally. It has been squashed slightly as a result of old damage. The knops are delineated from the inner part of the outer edge by grooves on both faces. This narrows into the sides, both broken and vestigial, one slightly longer than the other. The buckle frame now has a…

A simple single-looped buckle frame cast in copper-alloy of possible medieval date. It is rectangular in plan with a rectangular aperture and sides that are slightly bevelled both internally and externally. On the inner edge, just off centre, are corroded traces of an iron pin. The artefact has corroded to a red-brown colour with traces of light-green corrosion product. Rectangular buckles with simple frames have been published as 14th century in Griffiths et al. (2007, 96; ref. 648ff.), although a later date cannot be ruled out.

A corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing its pin. It is formed of a pair of oval loops that incurve towards the pin bar. The upper surface is shallowly bevelling externally; the lower surface is largely flat. The outer edges are moulded with central V-shaped mouldings flanked by transverse ridges. The pin bar is bent upwards at its centre; one of the outer edges is bent upwards, even more so towards one side. The buckle has a variable mid-green patina over a red/brown metal.

A damaged and broken cast copper-alloy medieval buckle frame, possibly of the composite type with forked spacer. The oval frame has a central, pointed lip and possible recess to act as pin rest on the inner face. The frame is bevelled externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. In cross-section it is triangular. The frame has been narrowed at the spacer for the pin and has broken through at this weak point; the pin is missing. The frame is thickened at this point and the narrowed part circular in cross-section. The spacer barely survives, if at all. The buckle frame ha…

A damaged fragment from a cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date (17th century AD). The fragment consists of the pin bar with small parts of the flat sides emerging at one end. The pin bar has a double lobed knop extant at one end. It has a square cross-section and has been bent twice from opposing sides as a result of old damage. Orange/brown corrosion product at its centre suggests that the missing pin was made of iron. The object otherwise has a variable mid-/dark-green surface colour. A double-looped buckle with double lobed knops at the ends of the p…

A broken and incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date, missing one of its loops in its entirety. There is a protruding lobed knop at the centre of the outer edge of the extant elongated D-shaped loop. There is also a moulded knop at each end of the pin bar. The knop on the outer edge is grooved to act as a pin rest, though the pin is looped such that it would not have sat in the extant rest. The pin is cast, simply looped round to attach it and tapering to a point at the other end (L.: 25.65mm). The frame is shallowly bevelled externally on the upp…

A slightly corroded, incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. The frame is formed of a pair of ovals which incurve towards the pin bar. The upper surface of the artefact is bevelled; the lower surface mirrors this with its shallow internal bevelling. Viewed in profile one can see that one loop has been bent upwards at an angle of around 60 degrees, accentuated at the outer edge. This is probably as a result of use exacerbated by old damage. The bar has a trapezoidal cross-section; the pin itself is missing. The upper surface is decorated with a mo…

A corroded, cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing its pin. The small frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. It is bevelled shallowly externally on the upper surface, with more pronounced bevelling internally; the underside is flat. The pin bar has a trapezoidal, almost triangular cross-section with traces of red-brown corrosion at one end product probably indicative of a now absent iron pin. A corroded cast copper-alloy asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. This example is incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. One loop of the buckle is D-shaped, while the other is rectangular. The outer edge of the rectangular loop appears to have a moulding at each corner and a double moulding at its centre, although these have been highly worn. It is possible this continued around the edge of the rectangular loop but is now obscured by the high degree of wear. The D-shaped loop has two small linear indentations in the centre of its outer edge, delineati…
