Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1650). The weight is broadly circular in plan and rectangular in cross section. The edges around the front face are faceted; one side is damaged due to an old and heavily abraded break. The design on the front consists of a concentric pattern with an irregular star formed from a vertical and saltire cross placed at the centre. This is enclosed by a single raised ring which in turn is enclosed by a further ring with a series of irregular triangles on its inner edge (forming a tooth like pattern). T…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragments of a lead alloy drain hooper (possibly), dating from the 18th century. The fragments are now bent but the hopper could have been either semi-circular or rectangular in shape, and would have headed a lead alloy drainpipe. There is banded decoration on both of the pieces and one appears to depict a flower stem or leaf design. The other has elongated pellets on it reminiscent of medieval ceramic vessel handles. Although lead was used for many purposes through history, including for toys, these lead alloy fragments are quite thick and an architectural use is suggested as no othe…

It is 168mm by 160mm in plan, 50mm thick and weighs 6.5kg. This find is clearly a weight designed to hang from an attachment through the hole. The finder interprets it as an anchor because the area where it was found was a 500 acre lake before it was drained in the 17th century.
