An extremely worn and damaged silver penny of Elizabeth I (1558-1603 AD). Mint: London. Initial mark uncertain due to surface wear. There is too much damage to the coin to provide a full identification. However, the obverse depicts a crowned bust facing left with rosette behind head right; legend is illegible. The reverse depicts a square-top royal shield. North type uncertain due to missing initial mark; however, cf. North 1991 Vol II, No. 1988, 2001 and 2017, spanning First-Third Issues spanning her entire reign.

A silver penny of Elizabeth I, minted in London, 1558-61, initial mark is possibly a martlet, North Number: 1988. The coin has possibly been pierced in the centre, although this may also be general wear and tear. Coins with a single piercing minted after 1180 AD do not normally qualify as treasure unless they are pierced at the top or bottom of the object with respect to the images on the coin. This is because single piercings are not sufficent evidence to say that the coins have been reused.

A silver hammered penny of Elizabeth I, 1558-1603. Obverse shows crowned bust left. Obverse legend reads E.D. G. ROSA SINE SPINA. The mint mark is probably a hand which would place the coin in the fifth issue, 1582-1600 Spink 42nd Ed. p.235-247 or third coinage according to North, J.J. 1991 p.130-140, 1583-1603). Reverse shows the royal shield with a long cross fourchee dividing the legend. Reverse legend reads CIVI/TAS/LON/DON. Die axis is 12 o'clock, weight is 0.47g, diameter is 12.92mm, thickness is 0.60mm. See North, J.J. 1991, p.130-140, no.1988.
