Slightly more than half of a lead alloy button, with the squashed remains of an integral, probably undrilled shank on reverse. The front is subdivided into a sexfoil by six radiating ribs between sunken flat-based petals. The ribs are decorated with pairs of longitudinal grooves, the edge between the ends of the ribs with pellets and the centre with another sexfoil formed from six pellets around a central one. It is likely that the base of petals were covered with some appliqué or inlay. A comparable example was found at Brize Norton in Oxfordshire (PAS BERK-FD99A3). Diameter 28mm. D…

Post Medieval lead alloy bag or cloth seal. The seal consists of two sub circular discs that were originally joined edge-to-edge by a rectangular loop of lead, now missing. One disc of the seal had a cone of lead projecting from its centre which was forced through a corresponding hole in the other disc, sandwiching the edge of the bag or bale in between. The two halves were then compressed together, flattening the cone and effectively riveting the seal to the bag. The flattened cone is marked with initials pressed into the surface as an alnage mark. One of the initials is clearly a ca…
