The coin is in poor condition, badly chipped around the edge and missing about 40% of the field and inscription. Its weight (0.7g) would be consistent with a penny of this type.

An early-medieval hammered penny of Cnut, struck at the Lincoln mint. On the obverse is a left facing bust holding a sceptre with a lis head. The legend reads: CNV-T REX. The reverse has a voided short cross with annulet ends and a pellet centre with the legend: LEOFPIN ON LIN. Cnut's short cross coinage was struck between c.1029 and c.1036, and this coin corresponds to North number 790.
