An incomplete cast lead-alloy weight, probably home-made/unofficial, dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. AD1600-1800. The reverse is plain and shows that the weight was roughly cast whilst the obverse displays lettering withing two concentric circles. It is mirror-writing and it is not possible to make out the writing in the outer circle. However, the central writing reads '[1/2]lb'. It is very similar to two lead weights recorded under LANCUM-1440E4 and LANCUM-0FA5A3. The artefact is incomplete due to old breaks. Dimensions: Diameter: 36.05mm, thickness: 3…

A complete circular biconical cast lead-alloy weight, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. AD1200-1600. The lead weight is flat biconical in cross-section with a rounded base and top. It is decorated with an erratic criss-cross pattern on both sides. The edges on both sides are decorated with large circular pellets giving the rim a bulgy look. This, however, may have improved the spinning motion of the spindle whorl, similar to modern spinning tops which have a thickened or bulging edge. Lead weights like these are common finds…

Cast lead-alloy weight, probably a Roman or medieval steelyard weight dating from c. 1st-16th century AD. The weight is made from lead-alloy and is onion-shaped with no further marks on the surface. There are remains of an iron hook at the top which is now corroded away and missing. Steelyards weights such as this were in common use in agricultural areas, but they were not official weights seeing that they were not marked in any way. Official weights would be clearly marked with an indication of the weight and the assayer's mark.

A cast lead-alloy weight of Medieval-Post-Medieval date, c. 1300-1900. The weight is hemispherical with a flat base and a slightly pointed peak. A circular perforation runs from the peak to the base to take a suspension loop or hook (now missing), and for which there is also an discoidal impression in the base. The weight is 1 lb 4 oz, and given this exact weight, a more recent date seems likely.

A cast lead alloy Post Medieval shield shaped weight dating from about 1500-1800. It has been roughly cast and has a slightly concave base; it is undecorated. The material has a number of deep gouges and scratches due to wear and damage; there is also a roughly carved 'W' on the upper surface. The weight has a light-medium grey patina with small areas of ferrous corrosion probably indicating an iron handle. It is in fair condition and weighs 477g (just over 1 pound); it is possible that the original weight was 1.5lbs but this has been reduced due to damage and wear and the loss of the…

A cast lead alloy and iron trade weight, of probable Post Medieval dating (17th to 18th Centuries AD). The object is a disc with slightly rounded edges and contains a central circular plug of iron, visible on both faces. One face has been stamped with II. The object has a mid-grey patina. Biggs, N. & Withers, P. (2000) note that weights of this type with numerals are consistent with the Roman weight-system as well as the averdepois system, thus they could equally be 16th century. Given the growing number of these lead weights being found in the North West, it is more probable that …

Medieval cast lead-tin alloy shield shaped trade weight with a raised cross on the front. It is shield-shaped in outline with a straight top and convex sides curving in to meet at a point at the bottom. The edges are corroded and laminating and the corners worn. The front is moulded into a raised long cross. It measures 32.7mm in height, 30.8mm in width, 12.9mm thick and weighs 37.6 grams. Similar designs can be seen in Biggs and Withers (2000:43), no. 123 and 121 who suggest a late 12th to 15th century date.

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1650). The weight is broadly circular in plan and rectangular in cross section. The edges around the front face are faceted; one side is damaged due to an old and heavily abraded break. The design on the front consists of a concentric pattern with an irregular star formed from a vertical and saltire cross placed at the centre. This is enclosed by a single raised ring which in turn is enclosed by a further ring with a series of irregular triangles on its inner edge (forming a tooth like pattern). T…

A complete, age uncertain, Roman-Post Medieval, cast, lead alloy, small/medium size, homemade unofficial trader's weight. The weight has a circular shape, fairly flat, although one side is slightly thicker than the other. There is a feint crease across the middle where it was slightly bent by the plough and a small, off centre triangular indentation on one side. The weight has little wear but it otherwise has an even matt, white coloured surface. This weight could date between 43-1799AD. Ref. A cast lead alloy weight, probably dating to between the Medieval to Post Medieval period, c. 12th-17th century AD. The weight is square in plan, with a domed upper surface and a flat base, resulting in a sub-trapezoidal cross-section. The upper surface is decorated with a large raised long cross with three edges of the cross remaining; the three ends represent different types of cross, one being pattee, one pommee and one undetermined with a large angular knop at the end. A crudely cast, circular lead weight of Medieval or Post Medieval date. It is circular and the upper surface is slightly dished. There is a narrow groove which partly cuts across the middle of the upper surface, but this is probably accidental damage. There are no marks of value, but at a weight of 53.61 (1.9oz), this was probably intended to be a 2oz weight. It therefore dates from the 14th century onwards when the imperial system of weighing started to be developed. It is 31.6mm in diameter and 8mm thick.
