Lead and possibly iron probable weight. Cast conical standing weight with nine vertical ribs on its sides. Ferrous corrosion may indicate either a lost suspension loop, or possibly an object embedded in the weight. The mass may relate this object to a Dublin Viking system of mensuration based on a module of 4.43gms, in which case it might represent 10 units. An alternative interpretation of such objects as playing pieces is also sometimes advanced. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950. Diameter: 19.1mm, Height: 21.4mm, Weight: 43.57gms.

A complete cast copper alloy troy weight of modern date. The main body of the weight is cylindrical with sharply turned edges and a narrow handle projecting centrally from the top face. The handle is tapers towards the middle and flares outwards again to form the wider circular terminal. The metal has a mid greenish-brown colour and is worn. The weight is 31.8mm tall, 19.5mm in diameter at the body, 10.2mm in diameter at the handle and weighs 47.5g. The English troy bullion system was used from 1526 with greater standardisation from 1588 onwards. Cylindrical troy weights such as thi…

A Lead alloy flat weight which is octagonal in plan and rectangular in section (flat). It probably dates from the Late Medieval or Post Medieval period. Oe face is marked in the centre with an indistinct stamp, possibly 2 in Roman numerals (II) or even II 2/1. The weight has a mass of 2.2oz, so may have been intended as a two ounce or 2 and a half ounce weight. It has a well developed white patina. Compare WMID-79E7F6 and SWYOR-486C72.

Lead weight. Cast plano-convex or bun shaped weight with paired angled apertures, probably made by using a pair of nail shanks as formers when casting the object. These could enable use as a suspended or steelyard weight, while a trace of iron on the convex face may be the remains of an iron suspension loop. The paired apertures and the possible loop stub confer a somewhat zoomorphic appearance, resembling an otter's snout, which is probably misleading. The weight is close of five ounces in either the Roman or averdepois systems of measurement. Suggested date: Unknown, possibly Roman,…

Cast lead weight, conical, sides faceted forming an octagon. Underside flat with a central shrinkage cavity, top also flat with traces of an iron wire suspension loop. Not datable, other finds from the site show activity over a long period of time which, again, is not helpful in suggesting a date.

The weight is an irregular shape, being a cuboid; sub-rectangular in plan, profile and cross section. All the surfaces are irregular and heavily patinated. Some are marked with possible designs - although some or all maybe marked happenstance or serve no identifiable purpose. The weight is a mid grey brown cream colour with an even slightly abraded patina that covers all surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found. The weight measures 21.5mm in length, 18.6mm wi…

A Medieval (probably 1200-1400) lead uniface trade weight, square in shape, and depicting a probable pelican displayed in her piety within a raised roundel 33mm in diameter and c.4mm high. The pelican's wings rise to either side of the central body and the head above is turned right with open beak. It is apparently standing over a nest containing chicks. The weight measures 38.89x36.63x9.88mm and weighs 110.31g (3.9oz). This is a medieval weight for a quarter pound. There are several systems to which the weight could belong. It is nearest to the quarter mercantile pound of 15oz w…
