Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper alloy mount or plaque of medieval date. The mount is shield shaped and is decorated on one side with an armorial design consisting of four raised, upward pointing chevrons. The original colours are no longer discernable though some patchy traces of gilding still survive. No obvious evidence for a method of attachment remains suggesting that this may have been inlaid into an object such as stone on funeral or other monuments. The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The mount is 68.7mm long, 59.1mm wide, 2.7mm thick and weighs 50.6g. Similar examp…

An incomplete cast copper alloy candle holder or candle stick of post-medieval date. Only the central socket and branched arms remain in tact, the rest having been lost to old breaks. A complete cast copper alloy flanged axehead of early Bronze Age date. The axehead is sub-rectangular with a narrow and thin rounded butt and widely curved cutting edge. There are slightly raised flanges along the sides both of which show signs of wear and the surface of the axehead around the cutting edge is quite corroded and pitted. No casting flashes are visible and may have been removed after production. The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The axehead is 126.3m…

A complete cast copper alloy zoomorphic knife end cap of post-medieval date. The cap is oval in section and is in the form of a stylized animal head, probably representing a dog or similar. The head has an elongated snout with a flattened end which curves upwards slightly. The mouth is indicated by a single incised groove running around the snout and the eyes are formed by single punched dots. The base of the cap has a deeply incised longitudinal slot into which the now missing tang of the blade/handle would have been inserted. The metal has a dark greenish-brown patina and survives…
