Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MODERN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy (bronze probably brass) merchants token for Bowyer's Wine and Spirit Company most likely to date from the 19th century AD. The token is struck on a flan of similar size and thickness to a half penny of George I or II (1727-1760 AD). And may in fact be a heavily worn halfpenny from this period reused in the later 18th or 19th century. Both sides are filed and polished smooth. The obverse is then struck with the design which may be a single die or made up of several separate (handmade) punches. It reads around the exterior edge WINES & SPIRITS (clockwise - 9 o'clock - 3 …

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MODERN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment from a 'fob' seal of late Georgian or Victorian date (1750-1850). All that survives is the abraded die element which is enclosed within a hoop of copper alloy. The die is formed of a ceramic paste which has decayed in the soil. The reverse of the die is filled with a ceramic adhesive or fine grained cement. The die is abraded and so some detail is lost; the best suggestion of the device is a plumed shield on which is emblazoned a rampant lion. It is possible that the plumed feathers device could alternatively be interpreted as a debased crown. The design is …

An incomplete fragment from a cast copper alloy 'fob' seal of modern date probably later 18th or early 19th Century (1740-1850). The seal matrix is composite, being formed from a clear glass intaglio set into a machine pressed body. The metal body is broken and damaged, the upper part including the loop is lost. The lower part comprises an irregular octagonal (rectangular with the corners taken off) setting with scroll like patterns on the upper surface. A single hole is present in the middle. The intaglio is well cut or possibly moulded; the design consists of a couple engaging in a …

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MODERN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete, broken and mis-shapen silver finger ring of very modern date (1910-1945 AD) relating directly to the Second World War. The ring fragment comprises the bezel and both shoulders; the hoop is lost, and the fragment is distorted by being squashed. The hoop was D-shaped in cross-section, flaring at the shoulders to form an oval decorated bezel. The bezel is inlaid with an enamelled design consisting of a centrally positioned cross pattee, the interior of which is recessed and filled with black enamel. The cross is enclosed within an oval border, and the spaces between the…

Object type: COIN
Broad period: MODERN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper alloy (bronze) farthing of George V. The coin has been pierced to form a pendant for suspension, possibly on a necklace or more likely on a fob watch. Further, the coin has been deliberately drilled, cut and filed to create a profile of the king. This work is very fine and the filing is extraordinarily neat, following the profile of the face and back of the head as well as the internal line which divides the inscription from the field. This design completely ignores the reverse of Britannia seated. The date of the coin (191[?]) and the wear suggests that it had been in circul…

A copper alloy coin / paisa of the Sikh Empire from Amritsar Mint, probably dating to the period 1839 to 1849. Similar examples can be seen in Bruce (1981) Standard Guide to South Asian Coins and Paper Money, p. 111. The obverse shows a leaf; the reverse a legend which is only partially visible. Obv: A circular blob with point extension at one end - a leaf. Between a letter on left and an E on right. The blobby thing maybe contained within a wreath. Cut sheet copper alloy shoe or clog clasp (male fitting), which would have been used with a similar hasp (female fitting) to secure a wooden shoe (overshoe) to the foot. The clasp is rectangular with a small incomplete sub-rectangular projection (hook) on one edge and an irregular lozenge shaped projection at the other. The small hook is abraded and incomplete; at the opposite end, the projection is broadly shaped like an anchor and was used to secure the clasp to the fabric. The surface of the hasp has worn away so that it is difficult to make out any decoration. The remains of a ser…

Broad period: MODERN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Hollow-cast silver spherical spacer bead, or possible pinhead, of relatively modern (later Victorian) date (1850 - 1920). The bead is irregular due to crushing and damage in the plough soil. Two small holes are present; one at either end (internal diameter 1.7mm), presumable to allow the bead to be threaded on a wire. The bead is decorated with a series of wire filigree / cast cells on its body which are inlaid with coloured glass, paste and / or enamel. The overall design is complicated and irregular due to damage. It seems to be based upon a series of repeating patterns arranged in …
