Possibly Copper alloy whistle. Cast tube with a pair of opposed rectangular slots at one end and a metal plate or reed within it at the other; an apparently separately cast and collared mouthpiece is attached at the slotted end. The tubular element bears the stamped legend: J. HUDSON & Co / Birmingham / 1916, which may supply an apt date. The manufacture of a whistle in Birmingham may suggest it was intended for military or police use as such objects would more usually be home made in an agricultural setting. Suggested date: Modern. Length: 62.1mm, Diameter (mouthpiece): 18.2mm, …

Copper alloy vessel fragment. Cast and turned rim fragment from a robust vessel of estimated rim diameter 110mm; the vessel body, which is of 3.6mm thickness, increasing to 5.7mm by a break in the vessel wall (see below), may also have expanded in diameter below its rim. The overall form may have resembled that of a chemist's mortar. The rim was square in profile with an upper lip which converges with the outer edge of the rim as it approaches a vertical break in the wall, possibly to enable pouring. The vertical break in rim and vessel wall is a deliberately made feature, though of u…

Lead alloy toy soldier. Solid cast semi-flat model representing a mounted lancer or uhlan with knee length boots, rectangular saddlecloth and round blanket roll; on one side the lance is modelled at the slope, running along the neck of a cantering horse; on the other side a hanging sabre appears. Sky blue paint remains on the trousers; the jacket was possibly red, and the horse and boots black; this could represent a continental soldier. The heads of both horse and rider are lost, as are the lower legs of the horse and the base. This figure was probably made in Germany, in a form deri…
