A nineteenth century lead Russian bale seal of St. Petersburg. The seal is a circular disc with a hole running between the two faces for the cord or string. Lettering is visible on both sides. The letters are very worn in places. Side A reads: ПД = PD (Hemp) П:ALM?ИMAH (P.ALM?IMAN) H14 Side B reads: SPB HHRH 1805 The letters SPB stand for St. Petersburg. The letters PD indicate that this was for a bale of hemp inspected by P. Alm?iman. The seal indicates that the goods have been checked for quality and/or taxed. A post-medieval or modern lead seal. The seal is circular and has a rectangular hole running from side to side through which a cord would have been threaded. Lettering is visible around the perimeter on both sides. Paul Cannon has kindly identified this is a Danish State seed control seal. Around the Danish crown was originally the inscription STATSFRØKONTROLLEN. The other face would originally have read KØBENHAVN.V. Both faces are now extremely difficult to read.

An unidentified object which is probably modern and made of a light white metal, probably aluminium. It is square in section, bent into a loop, and has nicks across the corners. This object was found on a site which has produced a lot of Early Medieval finds, and was originally mistaken for Viking hack silver, but the material is clearly not silver. It therefore does not fall under the 1996 Treasure Act.

An incomplete lead seal, probably a Baltic bale seal for flax of hemp, dating to the later 18th or 19th century. The seal is flat and was probably originally circular however much of the perimeter is lost. One side has an incomplete W[ ], below which is a number followed by a letter, probably [1]2K. The other side depicts what appears to be the heraldic shield of Narva (Estonia), having a short cross with possibly three pellets in one angle. Russian bale seals are well known in the area around Gainsborough.

Orange glass bead of uncertain date. The object is sub-circular in plan and has a cylindrical cross-section. The bead has a circular shaft which has an internal diameter of 1.02mm. The glass is simi-translucent and contains darker orange specks in places. There are beads like this in the Medieval period, but they are much more common in the 19th and 20th century. It is therefore more likely to be modern in date.

A copper-alloy thimble. The thimble has a height of 21.68mm, weighs 3.86g and has a diameter at the base of 18.49mm, tapering to 12.43mm diameter at the top, before the start of the domed top. The sheet metal of the thimble is 0.63mm thick. The lower 2.40mm is undecorated, followed by a line of tiny punched dots. This pattern repeats with a total of four lines of tiny punched dots and five plain bands. An incomplete Modern cast-lead pencil sharpener of 19th century date (c. 1850-c. 1900). The lower part is hollow and cone-shaped to house the pencil. Modern (probably Victorian) silver tube from a pen or pencil casing. The tube is now bent and distorted. There is a plain band at the upper terminal. The surface of the tube is covered in grooves long its length. There is a rectangular slot down the side, located about 10mm from the upper terminal, and this slot would have contained the slide mechanism to move the pencil lead. A complete copper alloy probable trader's token of early modern date. The token is very worn but appears to have the image of a seated dog within a now illegible circumferential legend on one face. The reverse bears an indiscernible design with ribbon detail. Trade tokens were popular during the mid 17th century but continued in use into the 20th century. Trade tokens and were used as local currency and as advertising tools. The condition and style of this example suggests a more recent date.

Home made lead die, probably of 19th century date. The die is a cube with two opposing convex sides and four flat sides. It is unlikely the die would settle on the convex sides leaving four options. On three sides a letter has been scratched by hand: T, P and L and on the fourth side is a large indent. It is 18.7mm across the convex sides, 15.2mm by 15.9 across the others and weighs 36.21 grams. Home made lead items are hard to date precisely but the style of the lettering suggests a relatively modern date.

Cast half of a hinged bull ring of round section; one end is bifurcated with a hole of diameter 3.4mm and an opposed stud; the other end is narrowed to produce a lug intended for insertion in the equivalent part of the other (lost) half of the ring. These objects were used to lead cattle, or on occasion to discourage pigs from rooting; the smooth surface was intended to avoid unnecessary discomfort on the part of the wearer.
