Copper alloy with traces of gilding Crucifix. Flat straight-armed crucifix with an apical loop for suspension. Both sides bear motifs in stamped low relief. On one side is the crucified Christ, draped at the waist and haloed, with scroll above. The other side bears the motif of a rayed Eucharistic host and chalice, and the legend THY / KING / DOM /COME - from the Lord's Prayer - with one syllable on each of the four arms of the cross. The cast collared spherical terminal of a hearth-brush, tongs or poker handle with a suspension loop which passes through an aperture, attached to a concavo-convex disc of diameter 44.5mm and thickness 1mm, intended to shield the user's hand from the heat of a fire. A further similar disc of diameter 47.6mm and thickness 0.8mm was reported along with this object, and probably derives from the same set of fireside implements. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950. Cast and turned rim fragment from a robust vessel of estimated rim diameter 110mm; the vessel body, which is of 3.6mm thickness, increasing to 5.7mm by a break in the vessel wall (see below), may also have expanded in diameter below its rim. The overall form may have resembled that of a chemist's mortar. The rim was square in profile with an upper lip which converges with the outer edge of the rim as it approaches a vertical break in the wall, possibly to enable pouring. Copper alloy shotgun cartridge extractor: a tool for removing a cartridge jammed in the breech of a shotgun. This procedure was more usually necessary before the introduction of automatic ejection systems. The tool would only be worn until required, when the three bevelled prongs would afford a grip on the metal base of a cartridge and a twist of the wrist would dislodge it.
