Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MODERN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy, silvered, seal matrix. Oval fob seal with a device on either side. One is a Classically inspired bust laureate, bearded and either cuirassed or draped, in a Greek rather than a Roman style. The other side presents Saint George and the Dragon, and in this case the treatment is loosely medieval in character: the Saint brandishes a hilted sword and wears a flattened hat; it is uncertain whether he is booted or armoured, though the horse wears a square saddlecloth of contemporary (i.e. early 19th-century) type. The dragon is an unhappy duck-headed creature with a forked tong…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy handle from a barrel tap of modern date, pelta shaped and attached to the remainder of the object by the central section which has broken off due to an old break. The inside edges of the loops and the outside edge of the main curve are bevelled from a central ridge, possibly the remains of smoothed casting seams. The inside edges are densely covered in fine, transverse filemarks. The bottom of the curve is slightly flattened; probably after casting as the seam is absent here; so it will stand more or less upright balanced on the curve. The central secti…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably copper alloy; not magnetic; probable screw. This object was identified by the finder as a phallic pendant, which was an initially plausible identification. However, bright metal is revealed by wear or abrasion of its dark surface, rather than representing a decorative coating. The 'glans' is separated from 'shaft' by a circumferential rib; however this rib appears to be repeated, indicating this to probably be an abraded screw thread. A light groove separating the 'testes' may be the remnant of a slotted head of a screw, though this has been distorted by heat or impact. Unles…

A dense copper alloy object that is unidentifiable, although Kevin Leahy believes that it could possibly be part of drive shaft and of modern date. It is domed in shape with a rectangular perforation down the centre that could have attached the object to something. There are two rectangular protrusions on the widest diameter of the dome at either side. The object is undecorated apart from an incised border at the bottom of the dome. The object is brown in colour with some areas of green discolouration. It weighs 19.5g and measures 16.75mm in height and 20.97mm at the widest diameter.

An incomplete cast lead-alloy weight, probably home-made/unofficial, dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. AD1600-1800. The reverse is plain and shows that the weight was roughly cast whilst the obverse displays lettering withing two concentric circles. It is mirror-writing and it is not possible to make out the writing in the outer circle. However, the central writing reads '[1/2]lb'. It is very similar to two lead weights recorded under LANCUM-1440E4 and LANCUM-0FA5A3. The artefact is incomplete due to old breaks. Dimensions: Diameter: 36.05mm, thickness: 3…
