Lead Alloy Possible Knife Handle fragment. Cast rectangular plano-convex object, lightly dished on its back. The display face bears closely-spaced cross-hatched lines with a smooth terminal from which a subdivided triangular motif extends into the hatched field. A rivet hole of diameter 2mm appears off-centre here. Broken at the other end and abraded along the edges, and lightly bowed along its length. The hatching presumably afforded grip. As the hollow on the reverse does not continue all the way along the object, it seems it is near complete, perhaps missing a terminal. This fea…

Cast lead trade weight with '1/4 Ib' in reverse at the centre and a stamp of a letter above, within two concentric rings, beyond which is a legend of letters, the maker's name or the company name, within a circular border, which are too worn to be made out, and in reverse, but perhaps 'Q R' in one section and 'O L V' in another. The weight of the object is 65.26 g which equates to 2.3 ounces. These weights were made by using a good bronze or iron weight (with a rim) as a mould, into which molten lead was poured. They generally date from the 19th century, when the lead weights so pro…

Object type: BULLET
Broad period: MODERN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead bullet with hollow core, cylindrical in shape and sub-circular in section, with three incised parallel lines around its circumference at the mid point. The bullet has been bent and flattened through use, from the impact it received when hitting a hard surface, once it had been fired. The diameter of the bullet has been distorted by the impact and when perfectly round, would probably have been about 16 mm. From the diamater and weight of this bullet, it appears to be a 0.625 (16 mm) bullet from an English Baker rifle type, originally the Pattern 1800 Infantry Rifle, but refer…

A complete cast lead customs seal of modern date. The seal is roughly circular in plan with a rectangular cross section and is comprised of a single disc of metal which is perforated by a hole running across its diameter. The hole would have been for wire or textile ligatures which were used to secure a bag. The front is decorated with a stamped design of the crowned Dutch shield bearing the rampant lion of Holland with a sword in its right paw. The reverse appears undecorated though is very worn. It is likely that this object was used as an official seal for goods exported from Holl…

Lead or lead alloy mount, probably fairly modern 1800 to 1900AD, in the shape of a knight on a horse (the knight's head has come off & it looks like something may have come adrift under the horses hooves). It appears to have been mounted using a central stud. It measures 120mm long and 78mm wide. There is a copper alloy mount of similar subject on the PAS, BH-B91E31, but it has been attached at multiple points. It is worth noting that there were Pilgrim badges with a similar subject (possibly George & the Dragon)and made of the similar material (lead or lead alloy). There appears to b…

Lead rod. Cast round section rod; the appearance of a point at one end may have been produced by a shearing cut. The other end is slightly lipped or hollowed.
