An incomplete Modern cast-lead pencil sharpener of 19th century date (c. 1850-c. 1900). The lower part is hollow and cone-shaped to house the pencil. It has a rim at the base and a vertical slot at one side. On the opposite side of the slot there is a raised cartouche or oval border, containing the initials 'SS'. The decorative handle is sub-triangular in plan and pointed in side view. Two scrolls rise from each side of the cone and meet a the top leaving a openwork area in the centre. An incomplete lead seal, probably a Baltic bale seal for flax of hemp, dating to the later 18th or 19th century. The seal is flat and was probably originally circular however much of the perimeter is lost. One side has an incomplete W[ ], below which is a number followed by a letter, probably [1]2K. The other side depicts what appears to be the heraldic shield of Narva (Estonia), having a short cross with possibly three pellets in one angle. Russian bale seals are well known in the area around Gainsborough.

A post-medieval or modern lead seal. The seal is circular and has a rectangular hole running from side to side through which a cord would have been threaded. Lettering is visible around the perimeter on both sides. Paul Cannon has kindly identified this is a Danish State seed control seal. Around the Danish crown was originally the inscription STATSFRØKONTROLLEN. The other face would originally have read KØBENHAVN.V. Both faces are now extremely difficult to read.

A nineteenth century lead Russian bale seal of St. Petersburg. The seal is a circular disc with a hole running between the two faces for the cord or string. Lettering is visible on both sides. The letters are very worn in places. Side A reads: ПД = PD (Hemp) П:ALM?ИMAH (P.ALM?IMAN) H14 Side B reads: SPB HHRH 1805 The letters SPB stand for St. Petersburg. The letters PD indicate that this was for a bale of hemp inspected by P. Alm?iman. The seal indicates that the goods have been checked for quality and/or taxed.
