Lead and iron fishing lure. Plano-convex casting representing a beetle with eyes, wing case and abdomen modelled, and with the bent stub of an iron hook or pin embedded in its flat underside on the centre line, a little towards the tail. The form of the object enabled it to spin as it was drawn through water, and the low relief detail on the convex face was intended to set up vibrations to entice fish such as salmon or pike - its 'realistic' appearance would be of more significance to the fisherman than to his prey. If successful, the object would function as a gorge, to stick crosswa…

County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast lead-alloy weight, probably home-made/unofficial, dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. AD1600-1800. The reverse is plain and shows that the weight was roughly cast whilst the obverse displays lettering withing two concentric circles. It is mirror-writing and it is not possible to make out the writing in the outer circle. However, the central writing reads '[1/2]lb'. It is very similar to two lead weights recorded under LANCUM-1440E4 and LANCUM-0FA5A3. The artefact is incomplete due to old breaks. Dimensions: Diameter: 36.05mm, thickness: 3…

Lead alloy toy dog. Solid Cast model of a dog at approximately 1:32 or 54mm scale. A naturalistically modelled dog is portrayed seated on its haunches and looking upwards; it wears a collar. The solid casting suggests this is distinct from the late 19th to 20th-century products of William Britains and other toy manufacturers, which were hollow cast. It may be a novelty from a Christmas cracker; there is no sign of this figure having been detached from a larger group. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1960. Height: 25.4mm, Width: 12.8mm, Weight: 17.7gms.

Parts of an unidentified object or objects of Post Medieval to modern date. The fragments are made of layers of lead sheet and pieces of leather, held together by copper alloy rivet and roves. There are two large pieces and eight less complete pieces. The two larger pieces are made of three sheets of lead stacked up, with several layers of leather on the top and bottom. The rivets fixing them together go through all the layers. One end of the pieces is rounded and the other is straight, but it is not clear which are breaks and which (if any) are complete edges. Lead alloy possible toy fragment. Cast flat fragment with vegetal relief texture on both its sides. It is suggested this may be part of a scenic tree, manufactured and sold alongside toy soldiers, farm animals and other items. The tree trunk would have been modelled three-dimensionally with a flat base to permit the tree to stand unaided, but branches and leaves were rendered two-dimensionally. The name 'LIVERPOOL' is written inside one of the slats. Attached to one wheel is a linear fragment, possibly a piece of track. The top of the carriage is broken.
