Object type: ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Large middle to late Neolithic axehead roughout made from a Cumbrian Group VI Langdale tuff dating from ca. 3500-2500BC. The roughout is in very good condition, with only little modern damage. It had been found by a farmer in a field and used as a doorstop on the farm for several decades. The roughout is thin-butted, double convex in section and has one crudely rounded and one almost rectangular end: the latter one would have been shaped into the blade. It expands in plan from both the butt and the blade end to reach its maximum width about midway along its length. Other recor…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A late neolithic or early Bronze Age ground flint axe made from a mottled grey flint which has patinated ochre. The axe is complete save for modern flake damage on one edge and possibly also on the butt. The blade of the axe has been ground to a smooth surface although on one side the flake scars are too deep to exhibit much of the ground surface. The axe measures 129.71mm by 60.89mm and is 60.89mm thick. The thinness of the axe suggests that it could be influenced by contemporary metal axes.

A Neolithic stone polished, banded perforated object or 'mace-head' dating c. 2,900 - 2,100BC. The mace-head is rectangular in plan with rounded ends and an oval cross-section. There is an hour-glass perforation located approximately one third along its length. The carving of the mace-head has been worked so the natural banding of the stone forms transverse stripes. When the mace-head was discovered it was covered in, as the finder describes it, a limescale concretion which came off as he rubbed his thumb over it. This was probably Thames 'race'. There is a patch of black near the dis…

An incomplete neolithic ground/polished stone axe. The axe is a flattened hexagon in section, with each ridge polished down towards a pointed oval shape and fully polished on both sides. The axe has suffered from various damage and losses; at the butt there is a recent chip but also an older removal or chip, which has been polished over in antiquity. At other end, the cutting edge has been completely removed in one large fracture and on one face there are two connected surface fractures with unpolished ripple marks within. On the other face the axe has been angled inwards towards the …

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of chert, possibly worked. If it has been knapped from a core, it does not appear to have been retouched subsequently. The object does not have any of the clear hallmarks of human intervention - it does not have a clear bulb of percussion or striking platform. What appears at first to be retouch on the lateral edges may actually be natural damage and wear. The chert has a pale brown colour. Find not photographed.

A knapped flint scraper of Neolithic date. The bulb of percussion and striking platform remain at the proximal end of the tool. Holding the flint with the proximal end facing the flint has had retouch applied from the dorsal face on the right lateral edge. However, it seems likely that the striking platform was used to rest the tip of the index finger on with the thumb resting on the centre of the dorsal face, allowing the worked scraper edge to be used to scrape towadrs the user. The flint is a mottled grey in colour. Find not photographed.

A large knapped flint knife of probable Neolithic date. The flint has had retouch applied to parts of the cutting edge. Object type: WORKED OBJECT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint of probable Neolithic date. The flint is sub-triangular in shape and resembles an arrowhead in shape. However, the flint has no invasive retouch and it retains the bulb of percussion and striking platform, a very unusual feature in Neolithic or Bronze Age arrowheads as the bulb of percussion is normally removed to facilitate hafting. The 'arrowhead' shape therefore seems likely to be coincidence rather than design. Very fine possible retouch resembling a saw blade may have been applied to both lateral edges, although it is possible that this has been caused during use …

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint of probable Neolithic date. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are clearly visible at the proximal end. There appears to be some retouch on left lateral edge and a small area on the right lateral edge. It may possibly have been used as a scraper. Whilst the flint superficially resembles that of an arrowhead the retention of the bulb of percussion and the lack of retouch on the ventral face suggests that is not one. The flint is a pale grey in colour. Find not photographed.
