Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast copper alloy sub-triangular stirrup strap mount. The attachment loop and flange are complete. The mount is undecorated and has two circular perforations above the flange. These are slightly out of line with each other. The edges of the triangle are more angular in shape than most mounts of this type. It is possible that this example is a repair or cheaper imitation of the more usual highly decorated examples. The surface has a patchy brown to green patina. This mount dates to the 11th century AD.

Incomplete and rather peculiar copper alloy strap-end. It is 57mm in length and max 31mm wide. The central part of the strap-end is widest and circular. It has the remains of 3 upstanding rivets, which have been inserted through the backplate. Apparantly a rectangular piece crossed the strap end here, over the rivets, joining with the rectangular end projecting from the circular area (measures 21x20mm) and the other projection from the circular area, an animal head. Two long 'ears' project backwards to join the remains of the 18mm wide strip. Either side of this strip are two semi-cir…

A cast copper-alloy suspension device probably for a hanging lamp. There is a tall central stem which ends in a large circular loop (c. 9.2mm across externally, c. 3.6mm diameter internally). The stem is roughly circular in section and at its base is a triangle whose corners are all extended into arms. These all appear to be intact (see notes, below), although one arm seems to be bent as a result of old damage. The arms extend for between approximately 13.2mm and 16.7mm from the stem; one appears to be slightly longer than the others. They all terminate in an pierced lug. On the unde…
