Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Paul and Charmian Woodfield (see notes, below) write: 'Base metal finger-ring open on one side, and having enlarged snake head terminals. The interior has traces of silvering, suggesting that it was originally silvered all over. This is a well known Roman mass produced style of jewellery, which can occur in a variety of metals, including in gold (Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire - bracelet), silver, and bronze. The nearest similar findspot for a snake-headed artefact is at Castlethorpe (Buckinghamshire - pair of silver bracelets of c. 1st century; 1/2 mile distant) where other jeweller…

Object type: SCABBARD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy dagger scabbard chape dating to the late medieval or early post-medieval period. The image provided (see notes, below) depicts the front-piece (traditionally a relatively thick cast element), but does not show the thinner backplate which would have been attached using solder. It is therefore uncertain that this backplate survives. This is a 'common style' of dagger chape (Bailey 1995, 70), which curves round - apparently to the right, from the front view offered - following the shape of the blade. At that end it tapers, terminating in a knop. There is a large, centr…

Object type: PURSE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The bar from a now incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval purse. The artefact features a sub-rectangular central block with its two extending bars. Through the central block there is a circular perforation c. 5mm in diameter through which the shank of the loop would have travelled. The block is c. 14mm long, c. 13mm wide and c. 9mm thick. It has a slightly recessed base and linear decoration on both faces. On the front this appears as a 'W' form; on the back it is rendered slightly differently as two verticals with diagonals joining their tops and bottoms and intersecting in the …

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete hand made iron arrowhead dating to the medieval period. The arrow is socketed, with a long socket of c. 45mm, and has a barbed head with a noticeable medial longitudinal spine. In profile it takes the shape of a circle with triangular protrusions on either side. Jessop (1997, 3) notes that this is a 'relatively simple design', the central spine providing 'improved lateral strength and aerodynamic properties'. The tips of the barbs have suffered abrasions, as has the terminal of the socket. This form is that described by Roger Ascham in 1545 as the 'broad head' or 'swal…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete forked spacer plate from a small medieval cast copper-alloy composite buckle. A worn and plain sub-oval frame with central pointed lip including triangular pin rest. The edges of the frame are thick at c. 5mm, and are probably bevelled (see notes, below). There is a notch in the frame which would have held the pin (now missing). The forker spacer continues for c. 7.5mm. Each prong has possibly been broken at this point following old damage. The plates have been lost. Such buckles are often found in fourteenth-century contexts.

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper-alloy hooked tag dating to the post-medieval period. The artefact has survived well and all of its attributes are intact: curved hook, sub-oval body, trapezoidal attachment loop. The sub-oval tag features a bordered field decorated by a device which is difficult to discern (see notes, below). It appears to feature a cluster of small circles in its lower half and perhaps represents a thistle. No parallel has been found for such a device. Hooked tags of this form can be broadly dated to the 16th or 17th centuries.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy suspension device probably for a hanging lamp. There is a tall central stem which ends in a large circular loop (c. 9.2mm across externally, c. 3.6mm diameter internally). The stem is roughly circular in section and at its base is a triangle whose corners are all extended into arms. These all appear to be intact (see notes, below), although one arm seems to be bent as a result of old damage. The arms extend for between approximately 13.2mm and 16.7mm from the stem; one appears to be slightly longer than the others. They all terminate in an pierced lug. On the unde…

An incomplete copper-alloy sheet scale pan of medieval date, 14th or 15th century. From the illustration (see notes, below) it appears that around two-thirds of the pan survives. It is dished to a depth of 9.5mm. Such artefacts usually have three circular perforations for suspension from the beam by strings (Egan 1998, 322); this broken example only features two. On the internal base of the pan is a finely incised flower motif of six compass drawn petals, each a narrow pointed oval in shape. This decoration is echoed in another scale pan found in Northamptonshire which can be seen …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy artefact of the Roman nail cleaner with moulded neck and shouldered blade. The suspension loop is c. 5.7mm in diameter and has an internal diameter of c. 2.8mm. It is in the same plane as the shaft. Below the loop is a moulding which narrows to a waist c. 2.7mm wide before expanding again to c. 4.2mm. The shaft begins below this, flaring to shoulders c. 14.7mm wide before beginning to taper. At the point at which the object was broken the shaft is 7.2mm in width. Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small artefact cast in copper-alloy, probably a brooch, possibly a buckle. It is difficult to say from the illustration whether or not the object is complete (see notes, below). It could, for example, be one half of a broken double-looped buckle, albeit a small example. However, the object appears to be complete and, as such, can be identified as a brooch of probable medieval date. A direct parallel has not been found for such a brooch (perhaps the most similar example can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 110; ref. 817)): lozengiform, with three knobbed corners and a wider ele…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval copper-alloy thimble of probable cast construction. Small, with ?pointed domed top on tapering sides with superficial, regularly punched indentations. These fine indentations might be indicative of use for relatively light duty work using narrow gauge needles (Holmes 1991, 2). Above the base is a bare hoop c. 2mm wide which is divided from the pitted area by an incised ring. There appears to be a bare circular patch on top of the thimble, sometimes called a 'tonsure', an area characterised by an absence of indentations. Such tonsures are indicative of a relatively early date…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman artefact, probably a strap-end, possibly a pendant of the military type. The perforations, a pair of kidney-shaped holes in the upper part of the object and a further broken perforation above, suggest that this is an amphora-shaped strap-end, as such dating to the fourth or fifth century AD (Geake 2001, 31). By definition, the artefact takes the broad shape of an amphora, tapering to a two-part terminal knop 5mm in width. The body to the right of the right-hand kidney-shaped perforation (when looking at the front view of the object) has been bro…

A medieval strap-end of composite construction dating to 14th century, possibly incomplete. The object is sub-circular in form and its front features a central spade-shaped grooved aperture which is flanked on either side by a hole and extant rivet. Although only the front view has been recorded (see notes, below), the recorder states that the front and back plate both survive either side of a forked spacer and attached by the rivets. There appears to be a slight split extending into the body of the visible front plate from the aperture. One might also conjecture that the spacer ha…

A contemporary copy of a 4th century Roman nummus. That the coin is a contemporary copy is indicated by its tiny diameter (9.4 mm) and the slightly crude depiction of the fields. It is however a fairly good copy of a Fel Temp Reparatio issue from the early second half of the 4th century.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Identification of this pair of artefacts is prejudiced by factors noted below. They were presumably cast in copper-alloy. They are cordate with a protrusion at the narrow end which is broadly trefoil in shape. In the side elements of the trefoil are circular perforations either for suspension as a pendant or for suspending further, lost elements in their capacity as mounts. It is thought that they are likely to be 18th-century harness mounts, of a type illustrated in Bailey (1995, 88; ref. 32).
