Object type: HANGING BOWL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy escutcheon from a late Roman or Anglo-Saxon hanging bowl. The hook is sub-rectangular in cross-section and arches to a break. The other end of the hook is flattens where it joins the back-plate, and tapers to the break below to form a wedge-shaped moulding. A small moulded transverse notch is located at the base of the arch, and a series of incised lines decorate the wedge-shaped moulding. These lines appear to contain a white-coloured paste. The back-plate is incomplete and now forms a wing-shaped panel on the left side; the right side is mostly missing. The top edge i…

Copper alloy strap end. Cast zoomorphic split-ended strap end, of slightly waisted form and more elongated than most observed by this reporter. An elongated beast snout terminal with long and pointed lupine ears is, unusually, modelled on both sides. On that less worn side, the eyes are represented by a pair of tiny ring and dot, and whiskers are modelled running across the jowls. Behind the ears a bordered panel of angular interlace extends to the rear split end; it incorporates recurring triangular configurations. The border was observed on the reverse, though interlace was not carr…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy stirrup mount of Early-medieval date. All that remains is the bottom of the face of the mount and the flange which projects as a tab from the rear of the mount and is slightly stepped up from the base. Above the flange and to one side is a circular hole for a separately cast rivet which is present. It is likely that there was a second rivet on the other side but this is now missing due to old breaks. Unfortunately the face of the mount is very badly worn and it is therefore not possible to discern any decoration. It is likely to be a Williams' Class A…

A cast copper-alloy terminal from a cross-staff of Early Medieval or Medieval date. Approximately half of the terminal survives but is distorted, most likely due to post-depositional damage. It would probably have been spherical originally and is made of an openwork lattice design composed of a series of joined pentagons with knops at each joint. There would have originally been a collar to accomodate the staff but only a small part of this survives. It measures 42.99mm in length, 32.09mm in width, 23.57mm in thickness and weighs 15.74g.

An incomplete middle Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy pin. It has a flat circular head with an incomplete coiled shaft extending from one edge. The disc is perforated by five circular holes, each 3.5mm in diameter. One hole is central, with the others positioned above, below, and either side of this, forming a cross pattern. The hole to the right-hand side is damaged. The surface on one face has decoration of the faint engraved outline of a diagonal cross, with expanded arms curving around the circular holes. It is difficult to reconstruct the exact pattern due to wear, but it seems that each…
