Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete post-Medieval to Modern cast lead or lead alloy circular double-sided token (c. 1500-c. 1850 AD). The token has a raised design on both faces: T C on one side with a tree between and a four legged animal on the other side. The animal is facing right and its tail is raised and curved over its body; pellet above and below. Diameter: 19.59mm. Weight: 2.83g. DA=12:12. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally, they are therefore hard to date precisely but those with initials are thought to date c.1500-1850 AD.

Lead Weight. Cast cylindrical weight. Four gouges appear on one end. The mass may indicate this object to represent five units of 4.07gms, which was a sub-unit in the early medieval Scandinavian system of mensuration; if less precisely calculated, it may alternatively relate to an Anglo-Saxon system employing modules of 3.1gms, in which case it would be approximately 7 units. The match with the former system is closer, though neither seems to relate to the marks on the object which are without discernible significance. Suggested date: if a weight, Early Medieval, 850-1100. The form…

Lead Spindle Whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with aperture of diameter 10.55. Decoration on one side only comprises a cast Star of Solomon (more recently known as the Star of David) comprising two intersecting triangles. The cylindrical form relates this object to Anglo-Scandinavian forms but the aperture is wider than that appearing on many earlier examples. The mass is similar to that of medieval whorls made of stone and would - unusually for a lead whorl - allow it to be used for spinning a yarn rather than cord. The geometrical star motif was current from the Medieval to Post-Medi…
