A fragment of a Neolithic flint axehead (3500 BC-2100 BC). This fragment is the butt end of a slender axehead. It has been bi-facially knapped. In plan, the butt is semi-circular and the sides flare outwards and downwards towards an oblique break. However, the sides are almost parallel. In side view, it is sub-triangular, pointed at the top and is pointed-oval in cross-section. The arrises are sharp although most are not very pronounced. The patination is grey with mottled off-white areas and has some iron staining, mainly along the arrises. The break is old and the colour of the …

An incomplete stone axehead. Oval shaped in section, the rounded but and blade ends are missing. One side has laminated away, and a large section missing from approximately 50% of the opposite side. The widest edge is 62mm and the narrowest end is 46mm. It is 11mm thick and 102mm long. It weighs 154.6g. This is possibly a Graig Lwyd Group VII axe, due to the the white speckle on a blue-grey matrix that is typical of that rock type.

Neolithic flint pick. Dimensions 416 x 66 x 49mm. Brown staining over dark grey / black flint. Rhombic section with sharp ridge on one face, largely formed by a natural cleavage plane (ancient frost fracture), the other face flaked entirely with a more rounded medial ridge. The dark brown patination suggests a probable peaty deposition, there is a trace of concretion on one face, most likely an accumulation of iron oxides and grit. All flake scars appear to be fairly hard hammer struck with some removals exhibiting a deep negative bulbs of percussion. At one end an impact ha…

Fragment of a large flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, dating to the early Neolithic. The arrowhead has shallow invasive parallel retouch on both faces with some shorter, shallow retouch near the edges. A flint end scraper probably dating from the earlier part of the Neolithic period (c.3500-2500 BC). The scraper is quite large and has been made on a primary flake of grey-blue flint, with the dorsal surface retaining over 95% outer cortex; the cortex has been flaked away to create the scraper edge. There appears to be no or very limited retouch on the ventral side. The lack of preparation of the flake suggests the tool was made quickly for a specific purpose and may have been disposed of soon after use.

Volcanic Tufa, probably Langdale Greenstone, polished axe fragment. Splinter from the cutting edge of a greenstone polished axe head, probably Group 6, comprising an area spalled from one face, and a very limited extent from the adjacent face. The angle between the faces is unusually sharp. This may indicate manufacture or use as an adze, for which a different action is required - this suggestion was kindly offered by Brian Kearsley. Alternatively, it may arise from heavy wear, or from the previous breakage and reshaping of an axe-head. Suggested date: Neolithic, 3500-2100 BC. Le…

Semi-translucent flint with cortex, possible arrowhead, otherwise a point. Triangular flake with bulb of percussion on ventral aspect. The dorsal face bears three other rippled flake removal scars and long narrow flake removal scars down two convergent edges. The selection of apt material, removal of long flakes and skilful working should probably argue a Neolithic date. The object could serve as a small arrowhead, though if so it was a very casually executed piece. Suggested date: Neolithic, 3500-2100 BC.
