Copper alloy Unidentified Object fragment. Cast round section pin with a rounded terminal and a thickened continuation from which springs an angled lug. The back of the lug is grooved with an unworn U-shaped gutter of width 3.4mm and depth circa 2mm. It appears possible that the lug and ball terminal together retained another element, possibly a cord, while the gutter on the back of the lug may have assisted the attachment of this piece to another. Object type: RIVET
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Rivet. Sheet metal of thickness 0.5mm rolled to produce a hollow tapered round section pin; light hammering has provided a slightly expanded flat head. This method of making a pin or rivet was presumably an improvised response to a particular need, though it actually occurs in this region as early as the Roman period. The condition of the thin metal here indicates a later date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 29.4mm, Diameter (head): 10mm, Weight: 2.04gms.
