Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An abraded cast copper-alloy piece, broken at one end certainly and therefore incomplete. It is long, thin and flat, of rectangular cross section. One end is expanded, rounded and perforated (Dia.: 4.7mm). Though abraded, the edge seems complete at this end. The circular zone around the hole is slightly recessed and thinned compared to the main bar beyond. This latter is broadly rectangular but has suffered from losses along the long sides. The short end appears to have broken in antiquity; the break is ragged and diagonal. This end has also been bent downwards. This artefact has a da…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead vessel which has been squashed flat, and therefore out of its original form. It was of open form and semicircular cross-section, intended to lean against (or be attached to) a vertical surface. The vessel flares out as its sides ascend; the flaring is more slightly pronounced above a pair of low transverse ridges around two-thirds up the vessel's side. They are echoed by an upper line at the lip. The field between is plain, unlike on other examples (cf. HAMP-5EE152 on this database for example). At the base the vessel is 42.0mm across, expanding to 73.2mm at the (…

A terminal or pommel of post-medieval date formed of a lead core encased by a copper-alloy exterior. The object is rectangular in plan with rounded corners. In profile it is sub hexagonal formed of two elements of trapezoidal cross-section which may have been connected together at the centre of the object by solder. The external surfaces top and bottom are curved in slightly. Through a central rectangle measuring 11.8mm by 16.9mm is a central perforation that travels all the way through (Dia.: 5.6mm). A groove defines the edge of the object on both halves. On one surface the edge is t…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A sub-rectangular flint tertiary flake of probable late Mesolithic to Neolithic date, long and narrow. There is a bulb of percussion beyond a transverse platform, with rippling extending up the face. The dorsal face features some three main blade like removals, all in the same plane and same direction as the main, ventral strike. One is central, with those to the sides bevelled. Losses at the distal end may be old breaks or flaws. The losses to the sides, though numerous, are inconsistent and do not seem to constitute definite retouch. The flint is a variable light-grey colour with so…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period (AD c. 25 - c. 60). It retains the stub of its rearward facing hook at the top of the head. Nothing survives of the integral spring and pin. The wings are minimal, sub-rectangular and flat. One has been bent round and under the head. The other has been truncated. The bow bends up beyond the head before curving back over gradually to the foot; the original curve has been distorted as a result of old damage. The bow is sub-oval in cross-section, flattened at the t…

Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A squashed and slightly fractured medieval copper-alloy thimble of sheet construction. The thimble is domed with a rounded top; it has been squashed from both sides, and cracked slightly at main points. The small, circular drilled pits begin at the top, the uppermost part of which is bare, and continue in a continuous spiral down the top and the sides in a regular fashion. They terminate above an incised border at the base. The thinness of this thimble might suggest that it was used for light duty work. The bare circular patch on top of the thimble, or 'tonsure', indicates a relativel…

Object type: TWEEZERS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A slightly distorted pair of copper-alloy tweezers probably Roman in date, although a medieval date cannot be ruled out entirely. The tweezers are formed from a single piece of copper alloy (Th.: c. 2.2mm) rectangular in cross-section. This has been folded over on itself at a defined loop to form a sprung end. They arms flare gradually along their length (4.3mm at the loop to 7.0mm at the tip) towards the tip. The arms are thinned at the gripping ends to create the nibs, both angled in. The metal has a dark-green patina which survives well. Similar tweezers can be found illustrated in…

A slightly damaged medieval copper-alloy buckle plate of folded sheet construction. The broadly square plate has a lower fold which is slightly shorter than the upper, but the same width. It features a rivet hole in each corner; all four perforations retain a dome-headed rivet, hammered down at the other end. On either side of the pin slot the plate is recessed for the (missing) frame. The lower fold extends as far as the proximal rivet holes; both have abraded through. Beyond these holes the fold has broken; the detached element retained due to the rivets. The buckle has been bent in…
