Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval buckle; Cast copper alloy single loop buckle with openwork design incorporating two 3-dimensional beasts in relief. Buckle has a D-shaped frame which widens and deepens towards the back of the frame to give a broad, concave, 3-dimensional cross section. This is decorated in openwork moulding with two opposing beasts, possibly dogs, standing chest to chest but with both heads facing forwards. The pin bar is recessed, narrow and circular in cross section. The pin is missing but would have touched the buckle frame between the heads of the two beasts. Dated to the late 11th or 12t…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman or Early Medieval copper-alloy finger ring, possibly created as a reuse of an earlier object. The ring consists of a flat band of metal which has been bent round to form a ring. The two ends of the band do not meet, leaving a small gap in the circle of the ring. One end of the band of metal tapers and curves to a pointed terminal but the other end is rather crudely cut off square across the band. This indicates that the band may originally have been longer and therefore part of a different object such as, for example, a narrow bangle. The band is decorated with an incised line ru…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Early Medieval mount; Anglo-Saxon mount with Style 1 beasts, dating to the 6th or early 7th century; Cast copper alloy mount with gilded openwork sections. Mount is sub-rectangular with crossing, relief-moulded lines sectioning it into triangular sections. The crossing point of these lines is off-set, giving differing sizes to the resulting sections. The largest section is undecorated but has a possible remnant of solder present, which may indicate that something else was once attached, potentially a silver appliqué, in the Bichrome Style. The small section (diagonally opposite the l…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Copper alloy jet with a shaped runner below. The jet is derived from casting in bronze. The jet is oval in plan, slightly concave on its upper surface and convex on its underside representing the depression in the clay or other mould material which was filled with molten metal. Projecting from the convex underside is an irregularly shaped runner. The runner is roughly oval in plan with a clean, slightly curved terminal. The surface of the terminal is much smoother than the rest of the object, suggesting that it was cut at this point to detach the runner from the freshly cast objec…

Unworked piece of Jet. The piece is roughly trapezoid in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The edges and fractures are very worn and smooth suggesting that it has been a piece collected off the Lincolnshire coast, which lies only a few miles to the east. Although the piece is unworked the field in which it was discovered has also produced evidence for Roman occupation. Since Jet was used as a material for beads and bracelets it was thought best to record this piece incase more evidence arises.
