A Post Medieval gilded copper alloy token or Gaming counter in the style of a George III (AD 1760-1820) half guinea , dating to AD 1790.
Dimensions: 19.8mm in diameter, weight: 2.72g.
These coin-like gaming pieces were made in imitation of gold guineas and half guineas of George III's 'spade' type issued between 1787 and 1799. They were normally made of brass and can also be distinguished by their inscriptions which were usually those used on the original coin. A contemporary forgery of a George III Halfpenny confirmed by Greg Spink of Spinks London. Apparently common around this possible date of 1775 (the last digit in exergue is not fully identifiable). The most identifying detail is the bust which is not George III in comparison to any of the issues. Obverse shows uniformed bust facing right with GEORGIVS III REX. Reverse shows Britannia seated left with BRITAN NIA.
