A slightly incomplete cast lead spindle whorl, dating from the Medieval - Post Medieval period, between AD 1400 - 1600 (diameter: 28.5mm; thickness: 10.5mm; weight: 29.6g). This spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in section with a central circular drilled hole (diameter of hole: 11mm) for the probable wooden spindle to run through. The probe is solid, and an elongated oval-shape measuring 22.61mm in length. The shaft is circular in cross-section, and 1.9mm in diameter, and survives for a length of 15.32mm. Very similar examples are known from Roman Colchester. Probes are thought to have been used for the application of cosmetics, or medicaments, particularly to the eye or ear areas.

Part of an iron staff weapon, or badge of rank, probably a cornet staff head. Similar to a large spearhead, with a rough, pitted surface. Object type: SWORD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded copper-alloy sword fragment of probable late Bronze Age date. The straight, uniform nature of the top and bottom edges suggests that this piece was deliberately cut from a sword, probably from re-melting. The piece is roughly rectangular in plan and has an elongated lozenge-shaped section. The surfaces are corroded and on one side there are scratches, which may be deliberate and contemporary. The object measures 26.3mm wide, 15.9mm high and 5.8mm thick. The weight is 11.14g.
