A hammered gold sheet of uncertain date. The sheet has a maximum length of 51.4mm, width of 39.3mm, 0.7mm thick and weighs 14.76g. The sheet is lacking any diagnostic features so the use and date cannot be determined. Small percussion marks on the surface indicate the sheet was intentionally flattened before being deposited, discarded, or lost. Due to the uncertainty of the date, the object is not considered Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.

Description: Fragment of gold sheet, probably of the Anglo-Saxon period. The bend is almost at right angles. To one side of the angle, one face is decorated; a triplet of straight grooved lines, the central one minimally wider, starts close to a finished straight edge and runs to a break. The lines are flanked on either side by a scatter of punched annulets (about 1mm in diameter), part-annulets and large dots. On the other side of the angle, the sheet is undecorated, although it has bends which may have formed a loose corrugation. It has a short length of original edge which mee…

A fragment of a possible Post Medieval copper alloy decorative end, c.AD 1800-1950. This comprises of a sphere of metal, polished to a high sheen, attached to a conical sheet of metal, which has been torn from the rest of the body and folded in on itself. It is impossible to determine the original size of this object, but the torn edges do show that this is not a gold-plated metal. It is likely to be a high-polished brass, given the colour and lack of oxidisation. The sphere at the tip of this piece is hollow but strong and unmarked, suggesting it is made from a strong metal (not…

A thin sheet of either gold, or gold plated metal which is wrapped around an iron component. The sheet is decorated by sets of parallel indentations which run along the surface in a diagonal direction. The decoration appears to have been machined. Though the purpose / function of this object is not immediately clear, its style of manufacture indicates a modern date. It may have been a component of a bespoke Victorian writing implement such as a fountain pen. It has been described as non-diagnostic for the Bronze Age, Roman, Medieval and Post-Medieval per…

Fragment of thin gold sheet or foil, from an object of indeterminate use and date. The artefact comprises a flat, roughly D-shaped sheet, with a single neat straight edge. A crease follows the line of the straight edge about 2-3mm from it, forming a slight  groove or ridge along the edge. The rest of the object has hammer marks, probably from being beaten into its flat sheet form. Although the straight edge appears to have been neatly cut (or scored and folded until it broke), it is not clear if the straight edge is part of the form of the …

A small fragment of gold sheet was discovered. The fragment clearly is part of a larger object, but unfortunately close examination has proved unable to establish from what object the fragment came. It is impossible to establish the date of the object from which the fragment came. Analysis of the metal content of the fragment was also unable to provide further help in dating the piece. The fragment was found to contain 91% gold. Dr JD Hill Department of Prehistory and Early Europe The British Museum London

A fragment of gold of uncertain date or function. Possibly hack gold. Sub-rectangular plan with rounded corners. Wedge-shaped profile, with a thicker edge which thins towards the opposite edge. Both surfaces are undecorated, but each has elongated impressed lines. On one surface are three horizontal lines which begin at the mid-point of the fragment, which corresponds with a slight convex raise in the profile. An incomplete fragment of gold of uncertain function and form. The fragment of gold is sub rectangular in plan and flat. Facets are present on both surfaces, suggesting that it has been hammered, they create an almost cross like shape. It measures 9.0 mm in length, 7.6 mm wide and 1.1 mm thick. It weighs 0.6 g. As the original function and form can not be determined from this small fragment, it is undiagnostic of age and can not be proven to be older than 300 years. It therefore falls outside of the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996 and should be considered to be …

A gold unidentified object, possibly a fragment of a torc or bracelet, of probable Iron Age date (c. 150-50 BC). Description: The object is comprised of two wires, sub-circular in cross-section, twisted together. The wires are roughly and irregularly facetted along their length, suggesting they were forged out from a square section rod before being hammered into a more circular cross-section. In many places, hammer marks and striations are visible. Both ends show signs of having been chiselled, suggesting that the original object was deliberately broken up. The fragment itself is…

Small strip of gold wound around a strip of gold wire. The gold strip on this peice of 'hack' gold is wound around the bars three times.
