An incomplete cast copper alloy S-shaped belt hook or strap fitting of probable sixteenth or seventeenth century date (AD 1500 - AD 1700). Only one half of the simple oval-shaped strap fitting and the S-shaped buckle survive. The strap fitting is oblong/oval-shaped with a small cast loop at one side. This is where the S-shaped buckle or hook is attached to the fitting. Another oval-shaped fitting would have been on the other side of the belt, with another small loop that the other side of the S-shaped hook would have hooked into.
The identical terminals are in the form of two swan's head with moulded eyes, feathers and beaks. The central part of the fitting, the shared gorged neck of the two heads, also has moulded decoration. This decoration is in the form of a collar enclosing a series of transverse ribs. The collar is flanked on either side by four floral/foliage or "spear-head" motifs. The surface is very worn, but there may be moulded decoration on the remaining surfaces is in the form of small pellets which are intended to represent scales or feathers.

A copper alloy cruciform mount of probably Late Medieval to Post Medieval date. The mount has a single integral attachment spike in the centre of the reverse. This is square in section and tapers to a point. The head is thin copper alloy and is irregularly cross shaped with rounded, slightly flaring arms and concave angles. No close parallel has been found, but the form is broadly similar to examples of studs and mounts in Egan and Pritchard's Dress Accessories.

A silver early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) sceat, Series E 'porcupine' type, c.700-750. The reverse of the sceatta appears to be a derivitive of the stepped cross type, this cross now joined at all corners making a second inner standard. No direct comparision could be found for this coin in the available literature, but this series is known to have a huge variety of subtypes. The double-edged standard of reverse is matched by fur examples in Metcalf and Op den Velde (2010), nos. 2309-10 and 2319-20.

Cast lead-alloy ampulla or pilgrim badge dating from the medieval period, that is circa late 12th-15th century. The ampulla is complete with only one of the fragile handle missing. One side is decorated with a moulded scallop shell while the other is decorated with a shield-shaped pattern.
Brian Spencer writes: 'Ampullae or miniature phials were an important kind of souvenir. Generally flask-shaped, but with a narrow, flattish section, they were designed to contain a dose of the thaumaturgic water that was dispensed to pilgrims at many shrines and holy wells. Ampullae were made of tin or lead or tin-lead alloy and were provided with a pair of handles or loops so that they could be suspended from a cord or chain around the wearer's neck. Coming into use in the last quarter of the twelfth century, they were, in England, almost the only kind of pilgrim souvenir to be had during the thirteenth century. They were nevertheless available at a number of shrines, and thanks to returning pilgrims or to local entrepreneurs, probably featured as secondary relics in virtually every thirteenth-century English parish church. Until the early fourteenth century, ampullae took various forms, were frequently inscribed and usually bore representations of the cult figure or relic that they were intended to commemorate...The scallop, besides being the badge of St James di Compostela, was the emblem of pilgrimage itself. Canterbury, therefore, took the instantly and universally recognisable scallo-shell as the decoration for the fronts of some of the earliest ampullae, and the same motif was later adopted at other shrines, including, probably, Walsingham, with its well or wells of healing water [...]."

Roman cast copper alloy Polden Hill varient 4 type brooch, missing the spring mechanism and pin. The head is approximaetly 17mm wide and formed of semi-circular wings with an open back finishing in flat circular end caps. The end caps are pierced to hold a cross bar around which the spring of the pin would have been wound. The ends caps are broken around the pierced section leacing two projecting prongs. The ends of the wings expand slightly in width and are plain. At the top of the head, projecting away, is a semi-circular crest pierced to hold the overhead chord, broken so that it know just forms a hook.
The head rises at 45 degrees from the head, before angling downwards at c.90 degrees. The bow tapers in width along the length and has a further angle in the centre where it continues in a straight line to the foot. Where the bow meets the head there is a raised moulded ridge to each side. The upper part of the bow has three deep vertical grroves forming ridges between. These terminate roughly one third of the way down the bow in a plain section. Three grooves, less deep and more uneven then run along the second third of the bow; the last third is undecorated. The bow terminates in an expanded foot. It is approximately 39mm long, 17mm wide at the wings and 6.5mm at the bow.
It can be dated from c.75-175AD. A similar example with a more elaborate crest was found at Shepton Mallet (Mackreth 2001:183, no.7).

A copper alloy domed thimble, probably of Medieval date with angled sides and a highly domed top with a distinct carination between the sides and top. The thimble has possible indentations arranged around the sides but are now obscurred. The surface of the thimble has a dark brown patination and is worn.
Egan (2005:132) illustrates two similar examples from London, 639 and the smaller 638 from mid-17th century contexts.

An incomplete stone hone, probably formed from a pale yellow/white schist, missing both ends due to old breaks. It is rectangular in form and section, with some damage to at least two faces and tapering slightly towards one end. All faces have evidence of use wear resulting in the surviving surfaces being worn smooth and the corners/edges rounded. It measures 153.48mm in length, 26.16mm in width, 20.83mm in thickness and 161.56g in weight.
This is a simple stone (schist?) hone or whetstone. The lack of any distinctive typological features makes close dating of hte object impossible and it may well belong to any point from the Roman period onwards with a more recent date perhaps most likely.

A copper alloy Romano-British end-looped cosmetic pestle probably dating from 1 - 300 AD. This example appears to be unusual because the handle or loop is placed on the concave side of the curved rod forming the pestle, rather than at the end or on the convex side. In Jackson's Catalogue of Cosmetic Sets, only 1 in the 600 examples listed has this arrangement.
The pestle is a curved and tapering rod of triangular section. It tapers to a point at one end, and extends into a sub-circular loop at the other end. The loop is of rounded triangular section, narrower than the working part of the pestle. There is evidence of some wear on the convex face of the centre of the pestle, extending towards the tip. The inside of the lop has some wear on the area towards the end, and opposite the pestle. This is probably from suspension.
Jackson notes that cosmetic pestles and mortars are distinctively British objects. Compare number 101 in Jackson's Catalogue (2010). There are no examples of this design on the PAS Database.

A complete medieval or post-medieval cast lead weight, circa 1400-1750 AD. It is circular and flat, with three raised concentric circles on one surface, the other side being blank. The weight measures 34.0mm in diameter, has a thickness of 6.4mm, and weighs 57.9g. Its surface is slightly worn.
Similar examples may be found on the PAS database at WILT-B719E6, SF-F33C1B, NMS-359184, PUBLIC-FD4EC4, WILT-F69AD3 and PUBLIC-FF01F6. Their weights vary. Biggs and Withers (2000, 25), catalogue several similar weights with concentric circles, but these mostly cluster around 2oz (c. 57g). A medieval or early post-medieval date has been suggested by Biggs and Withers.

A cast copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative Polden Hill brooch with spring mechanism dating from AD 75 - 175. At the top is a broken rearward-facing hook that would have held the chord. The wings are semi-circular in section and hollow to accommodate the missing spring. There appear to be incomplete endcaps, with holes for the axis bar. The front of the wings are decorated with vertical bands of beading and traces of silvering. The bow is decorated with vertical mouldings and a panel of incised oblique lines on the side. The foot is round and very small. The catch plate on the reverse is incomplete and the pin is missing.

A slightly distorted stirrup shaped medieval silver finger-ring. The bezel of the ring consists of a spherical knop on a flattish triangular shoulder. This abruptly changes to a narrow flat band, 3.77mm and 1.27mm thick. Along the outer face of the hoop the widely spaced letters AVE MA are roughly inscribed in Lombardic style. Presumably this is a shortened form of the Latin, Ave Maria or Hail Mary. Why the letters are not closer together to include the whole words remains unclear
Medieval stirrup rings with the silver knop bezel of 1200-1400 are commonly reported under Treasure Act 1996. For a comparison see finger-ring from Codford, Wiltshire (2006 T236, Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, fig 420) as well as Treasure Annual Report 2005/6 fig nos. 414, 415 and 416.
In terms of age and as the object contains more than the minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

The ring is slightly bent out of shape and is oval in plan with a projecting flat oval shaped bezel (9.53 mm long and 8.45 mm wide) and ten small projecting knops around the outer circumference. The bezel is plain but on more elaborate examples of such rings there are designs and letters. One side of the ring is flat whilst the other is rounded.
The ten knops around the circumference of the ring suggest that it was a decade ring, used as a discreet way of assisting in the saying of the ten prayers that make up the Rosary in the Catholic Christian tradition. The term decade refers to the ten prayer beads used to count the series of prayers that make up the rosary. Decade rings were a form of rosary used for repeating the ten prayers, with the central bezel representing the Pater Noster (Lord's Prayer). Since they were more discreet than rosary beads, decade rings became popular during times of religious persecution, particularly in the 16th century. Compared to some decade rings this example is quite crudely executed, and some are much more elaborate. A silver example (WAW-CB51A1) on this database has the latin initials for Jesus inscribed. Another, gold example (YORYM-07E2C3), has a cross on the bezel, whilst a copper-alloy example (SOMDOR-7E6495) has what appears to be a leaf depicted. However, other cruder lead examples are also known and one is recorded as DUR-1B82E4 on this database. It is likely that the cruder examples executed in non-precious metals were used by those who did not have the means to purchase more expensive versions. Given the similarity to other examples known, this ring is almost certainly a decade ring, and is therefore most likely to be post-medieval in date, perhaps dating to the 16th or 17th century.
It measures 35.32 mm wide from side to side and 32.5 mm long from the bezel to the rear. It is 5.26 mm thick and weighs 18.8 grams. It has a pale cream patina.decade3636150017004WMID2011-10-01T00:00:00Z2011-10-31T00:00:00Z2011-12-08T10:02:48Z2023-01-24T11:21:26Z18.8PAS4EE08B47001C535.2635.3232.5191412141426150521477715064StaffordshireEast StaffordshireWoottonSK114452.993219-1.837572634618710WMID-08BFE2Lead11094CastCompleteGoodPOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderWMID-08B476 plan.jpg359771images/tbrindle/West MidlandsCertain12023-01-24T11:21:26.697ZRutland1Unitary AuthorityMEDIEVAL1Metal detector08A7D7.JPG37528GPS (from the finder)1232911MD15Unitary AuthorityCertain2LEIC375281500Brookex14221141503.53Rutland106272020-07-06T22:24:07ZReturned to finderEast MidlandsCirca

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals, slightly irregular in form. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the front, the latter more shallowly. The reverse is flat. The pin bar thus has a sub-triangular cross-section; the pin is missing.
Length: 22.2mm, Width: 18.6mm, Thickness: 2mm, Weight: 2.41g
Buckles of this size with double oval frames have been found in late medieval contexts (e.g. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 82-83; nos 332-333), but as the form persists, a later date cannot be ruled out.
