Copper alloy plate, probably from a strap fitting of medieval or Post medieval date. The piece is rectangular with one slightly concave end and a projecting trapezoid tab at the opposite end. The tab narrows away from the main plate and ends in a slightly bent up end, probably an old break. There are two circular holes thtough the plate, one near each end for attachment. The front is gilded. It is 36.0mm long by 16.8mm wide and 1.2mm thick and weighs 3.86g. The lack of pin slit suggests it is not from a buckle and it is more robust than most strap end or book clasp plates suggesting…

A cast copper-alloy medieval strap-loop/slide with central perforation for a separate internal rivet, now missing as the hole has abraded through. The artefact is broadly rectangular, with a large moulded outer edge. The outer edge has terminal knops and a large central knop. This latter is flat on its reverse and decorated on its upper surface with five transverse grooves that create ridges. Its appearance is therefore reminiscent of a bar mount (see e.g. Read 2001, 23; fig. 12). This object now has a dark green patina with areas of lighter corrosion product. A direct parallel in for…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date (c. 17th century). The mount is formed of an openwork trefoil plate with a bifurcating collar below, the terminal of which would have curved back in a blunt hook, now missing. The upper lobe of the trefoil is perforated to receive a rivet; there is a further rivet hole central on the collar. The upper rivet is missing; corroded iron remains of the second survive in situ. The other lobes of the trefoil are perforated and there is a further, this time broadly lozengiform, hole between the plate and the collar…

A broken cast copper-alloy hooked plate from a post-medieval sword-belt fitting. Overall, these strap-fittings tend to consist of a mount with three suspension loops from which hang a trio of hooked plates; the scabbard straps would have been attached to these plates. The ensemble features foliate decoration on their visible faces: an illustration of a complete sword-belt fitting can be found in Read (2008, 220; ref. 793). Their design and decoration are relatively standardised. Such fittings 'proliferate in the 16th and 17th centuries' (Geake 2001, 35). This single hooked plate sur…

Post Medieval sword belt mount dating to the 16th century. The mount has a tri-lobed end with a narrowed waist underneath. This waist then expands forming rounded shoulders before tapering in width to a lateral ovoid section. Below the oval starts the hook which extends downwards before curving towards the front of the plate and ends in a rounded knop. The front of the mount has floriate decoration. There are two iron rivets still present in the plate, both in the centre; one to the tri-lobed end and one towards the hook. It measures 49.1mm long, 20.8mm wide, 2.3mm thick (12.7mm thick…

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap fitting of post-medieval date. The strap fitting, probably a strap slide, is formed from a single piece of metal which is sub-rectangular in plan with bevelled edges on the longest sides. On the reverse the attachment arms project from the centre of the shortest sides and fold over backwards. Both are broken and worn. The fitting is undecorated. This fitting is similar to 17th century mounts seen on the database such as YORYM-F79CF1 and SF-B24B32. The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The fitting is 22.9mm long, 14mm wide, 1.2mm…

Medieval cast copper alloy strap slide. The frame is trapezoid with a wider top than base bar. The sides of the frame are rectangular in cross section apart from the top bar which is D shaped with a convex curved top. There is an integral circular rivet projecting outwards 3.7mm from the centre of the base. The frame is 14.6mm wide, 14.6mm long including the rivet and 2.6mm thick, it weighs 1.01 grams. Egan and Pritchard (1991) illustrate a very similar example (page 231, fig 147, No.1239) which they date from the late 13th to the end of the 14th centuries AD.

A broken, therefore incomplete, cast copper-alloy post-medieval sword-belt fitting (hanger). This strap-fitting consists of half of the original mount (hanger), which, when complete, would have had two suspension loops from which a pair of hooked plates would have hung; in turn, the scabbard straps would have been attached to these plates. The mount features foliate decoration on its visible face. Such fittings are rarely found complete, rather elements or broken examples are far more common. However, a complete sword-belt hanger of this type can be seen on this database (ref. WILT-5F…

Cast copper alloy sword hanger dating to the Post-Medieval period. The object consists of a trilobed plate with a forward facing hooked projection. The plate is decorated with a foliate design. There is a circular rivet hole at each end, one of which contains the remains of the rivet. The projection curves around to form a hook which has a zoomorphic snake like head. The object has been tinned and has a silvery brown patina. A similar example is 794 and 795 Read, (2008).

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap slide dating from the late Iron Age to the Roman period. The object is formed from two prominent domes within a raised circular border forming the typical Iron Age style "eye" design. Each end of the object terminates with a point. On each end of the reverse is a rectangular sectioned projection which would have joined forming a rectangular attachment loop. The object has a dark green patina and is in good condition.
