A Post Medieval cast copper-alloy double loop buckle frame, c. 1600-1720 AD. The loops are oval with the outer edges expanded into points at the top and bottom and incorporating a raised line, the outside edges are also bevelled. The strap bar is plain with iron corrosion at the centre which maybe the remains of an iron pin. It is 30.31mm long, 20.02mm wide, 2.40mm thick and weighs 3.80 grams. Cf. Whitehead 2003, page 71, esp. No. 442.

An incomplete copper-alloy double-loop trapezoidal buckle. Whitehead suggests a 17th century date for this form of buckle (1996: 84).
The intact side of the frame is sub-trapezoidal in plan, with a projecting lobe on each corner and a central pointed pin rest with incised transverse groove. The central axis bar is of rectangular section and has a projecting lobe at each end. The pin, made from a flattened and tapering length of copper-alloy wire, has been looped around the axis bar, its point sitting on the pin rest. The flat surfaces have been tinned or silvered. Only a sm…

A Post Medieval cast copper alloy double loop buckle frame (1550-1650 AD). The loops are oval and almost triangular in cross section with a flat back and very bevelled sides. The strap bar is narrowed with a pointed knop at either end. From the centre of the outer edge of each loop projects a large oval knop that has been flattened on the upper surface and decorated with an incised sexfoil flower. An Iron concretion remains on the strap bar suggesting that the pin, which is now missing, was made from iron. 80% of the buckle is covered with some kind of black coating (possibly lacquer)…

Only a small portion of the frame remains. It is cast integrally to the forked spacer, which has a solid rectangular area at the frame end and steps backwards into two projecting points, both of which are damaged. At the centre of the frame end is a pin slot containing a bent wire pin. The piece is heavily corroded. It measures 17mm long, 15mm wide and 3.6mm thick. The weight is 2.66g.
Examples of buckles with integral forked spacers have been found in London (see Egan and Pritchard 1991: 325-326). The str…

Treasure case 2010 T820
A complete silver annular buckle of Medieval date, probably from the thirteen or fourteenth century. The outer diameter is 19.73mm, thickness 4.41mm and weight: 2.68g.
The buckle has a circular sectioned frame. There is a slight recess in the inner side of the frame in one area, just 4mm long. This may indicate where the pin was attached, but it is not enough of a constriction to stop the pin moving. The free running silver pin is folded around the frame to form a loop. The shaft of the pin tapers from the loop to the sharp tip which is slightly undercut.

An incomplete copper-alloy frame from a Medieval single-loop buckle.
The fragment represents the outer part of the frame. The curved top and bottom sides are of thin section. The outer side is much wider and has two moulded lobes flanking a sheet-metal roller, the latter of which is looped around a central constriction. The piece measures 15.9mm long, 37.9mm wide and 8.7mm thick. The weight is 7.09g.
Research into similar buckles from Meols, Cheshire, suggests that this form, with a broad sheet-metal roller, probably dates from the late 13th to early 14th century…
