Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Buckle Frame, as identified by finder. Cast annular buckle with central bar; the frame is decorated with alternating raised and sunken panels around its inner and outer edges. Now bent outwards. A close parallel is dated by Whitehead (reference kindly supplied by the finder; 1996, page 46) to the 15th century. However, the traces of black lacquer noted by Whitehead and also appearing on this piece is a feature of Early Post-Medieval metalwork, so a slightly extended date-range is proposed. Suggested date: Late Medieval to Early Post-Medieval, 1400-1550. Diameter…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Possible Mount. Cast flat-backed discoid object with central aperture of diameter 2.6mm. The display face has rounded sides and a single circumferential groove around it. An alternative identification as a more recent washer was discounted because of the decoration of a putative display face. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Diameter: 9.4mm, Thickness: 1.4mm, Weight: 0.53gms.

Copper alloy Brooch. Dolphin Brooch fragment. The cast tapering D-section bow of a small dolphin brooch, with traces of a decorative longitudinal rib along the crest of the bow. Broken at the head, where traces of a slot for pin remain, and abraded overall, disrupting what was formerly an overall patina. Suggested date: early Roman, 40-80. Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast T-shaped Brooch, with a moulded head with slot for pin, side lugs or vestigial wings, and reeding extending from the wings down along the bow as appears on Langton Down and some Hod Hill forms; however, the square-section bow is atypically thick. The catch-plate is pierced with a round hole of diameter 3.4mm, and four slightly smaller lateral perforations have been drilled through the bow, presumably for modification or adaptation of the fastening mechanism. The brooch has partially broken at the uppermost of these perforations. This is one of a numb…

Copper alloy loop. Cast sub-rectangular strip, narrower at both its ends and rolled at one end to form a circular loop of internal diameter 3.9mm, perhaps for suspension of another object. A black coating overall may suggest painting or lacquering of metalwork, as is characteristic of objects of Early Post-Medieval date. Suggested date; Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast and curving strip with a ridge on its convex surface, possibly slightly expanded at its ends if this does not arise from its breakage in antiquity. This may derive from the bow of a small Romano-British brooch, for example a 1st-century strip bow brooch such as the Hod Hill, Langton Down or Aucissa types, though other identifications are equally possible. Heavily abraded. Suggested date: Early Roman, 40-80. Length: 18.7mm, Width: 7.06mm, Thickness: 2mm, Weight: 1.09gms.

Copper alloy book clasp fragment. Cast sub-rectangular strip, narrowed at a folded lug at one end and torn around a rivet hole of diameter 1.2mm at the other; a two further similar rivet holes lie adjacent. A double ring and dot of diameter 6mm lies centrally on the strip. On the reverse there is the stub of a possibly integral rivet of diameter 2.8mm, though this does not align with the position of ring and dot on the display face. Copper alloy brooch. Fragment of a cast composite trumpet brooch derivative, as identified by finder. An expanded bow with circular concavity indicates a two-piece construction; the fastening mechanism (now lost) was presumably engaged with this hollow. The upper bow is modestly expanded, and narrows to meet a heavily moulded group of three ridges; with the second and third ridges separated by a deep trough, as a dramatic departure from the mid-bow acanthus leaf decoration of the usual trumpet brooch type. Below the third ridge, the bow assumes an unusual configuration which appears q…

Copper alloy, with a high proportion of tin (as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy), spur terminal, as identified by finder. Cast side and double looped or figure-of-eight terminal of a spur side, of oval section. Decoration comprises a pair of convergent lines on the outer side of spur. The decoration of the spur side is unusually fine, as are the central position of the terminal loops, and the general high quality of work. The figure-of-eight loops appear on both a 14th-century spur from Winchester and others which are probably post-medieval but residual in 18th and 19th-century conte…

Copper alloy vessel leg (as identified by finder). A cast and possibly anthropomorphic leg from a vessel, perhaps from a tripod ewer serving as formal tableware rather than a cooking pot. The sharply everted foot appears like a shoe or possibly the end of an armoured leg, and is separated from the leg by a horizontal rib in relief. The leg itself is of irregular hexagonal section, and unusually long and slender. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1350.
