An incomplete lead pilgrim's ampulla. The ampulla is pouch-shaped with triangular suspension rings at the base of the neck. One suspension ring is intact, the other is missing. Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval or early post-medieval wrought iron arrowhead (possibly a crossbow bolt head). The arrowhead is of bullet headed type, with a head that is small, long and slender, presumably designed to give it increased penetrative power for piercing steel armour. It certainly seems more likely to be of a type used in battle rather than in hunting. the arrowhead is socketed, although much of the socket is missing. The socket is circular whilst the form of the arrowhead is lozenge shaped in section. The form of the socket continues as a tapering rib which runs down the centre of the point …

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Post-Medieval gold finger ring. The hoop is D-shaped in cross-section and gently widens on either shoulder to form a tall, pierced stop either side of a rectangular slot. The slot would have contained a setting or swivel, secured by a rivet through the stop on either side. The shoulders are decorated with foliage and pellets presumably representing grapes or berries. Examination under a microscope reveals traces of black and white enamel within the recesses of the foliage. The ring has been examined by Judy Rudoe, Curator, British Museum and Richard Blurton, Curator of South and S…

A medieval to early post-medieval lead weight. The weight is flat, shield shaped and decorated with three lions passant guardant, to the left, in relief within a shield-shaped field and surrounded by a raised border. There is a large, irregular hole at the top of the weight. This weight is a crude version of the 'official' design. The reverse of the weight has a rectangular-shaped hollow in it's surface, which breaks through the surface of the front of the weight at one end to form the hole. The weight is 201g (7ounces). The hollow in the reverse may have been a way of redu…

Copper alloy Buckle Frame, as identified by finder. Cast annular buckle with central bar; the frame is decorated with alternating raised and sunken panels around its inner and outer edges. Now bent outwards. A close parallel is dated by Whitehead (reference kindly supplied by the finder; 1996, page 46) to the 15th century. However, the traces of black lacquer noted by Whitehead and also appearing on this piece is a feature of Early Post-Medieval metalwork, so a slightly extended date-range is proposed. A copper-alloy stamp, probably for leather book bindings. The stamp probably dates to the late medieval or early post-medieval period. Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast T-shaped Brooch, with a moulded head with slot for pin, side lugs or vestigial wings, and reeding extending from the wings down along the bow as appears on Langton Down and some Hod Hill forms; however, the square-section bow is atypically thick. The catch-plate is pierced with a round hole of diameter 3.4mm, and four slightly smaller lateral perforations have been drilled through the bow, presumably for modification or adaptation of the fastening mechanism. The brooch has partially broken at the uppermost of these perforations. This is one of a numb…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible brooch fragment. Cast and curving strip with a ridge on its convex surface, possibly slightly expanded at its ends if this does not arise from its breakage in antiquity. This may derive from the bow of a small Romano-British brooch, for example a 1st-century strip bow brooch such as the Hod Hill, Langton Down or Aucissa types, though other identifications are equally possible. Heavily abraded. Suggested date: Early Roman, 40-80. Length: 18.7mm, Width: 7.06mm, Thickness: 2mm, Weight: 1.09gms.
