Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron strip, perhaps the blade from a knife. It is 120mm long and one end is encased in delaminating corrosion. Away from this end, it is generally around 19mm wide, with one edge straight and 3mm thick, tapering to the other edge which may represent the cutting edge. The end without the corrosion layers has the cutting edge curving up to meet the back of the blade in a rounded point. The corroded end is broken and has no evidence of a whittle tang. The strip is now bent at a slight angle about halfway along its length. It weighs 45.0g. The identification as a knife is very t…

Heavily corroded iron rotary key of Medieval to Post Medieval date. The finer detail of the key is somewhat obscured by extensive corrosion and active spalling of the surface, but it remains complete. The bow is an open D-shape with a slightly angled outside loop. The solid shank tapers out perpendicularly from the centre edge of the bow's straight loop. The rectangular bit is positioned flush with the end of the shank and in the same plane as the bow. It has two extant wards on the front edge although a third may have been lost to corrosion; with a further three let into the bottom e…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval or post-medieval iron whittle-tang knife blade with an incomplete tang. The back is flat, and the former cutting edge tends to taper gently and generally in a straight line, disregarding several irregular serrations, from the hilt to about ten millimetres before the extant tip. From there it tapers more steeply and convexly to meet the back edge. The serrations seem to be a consequence of corrosion and fragmentation rather than an intentional feature. The tang is broadly rectangular in cross-section and projects from the blade close to the back edge. It tapers in width a…

Heavily corroded forged wrought iron Medieval stirrup. The frame is approximately 126mm tall by 100mm wide and is in the shape of a convex-sided triangle with the apex at its attachment end. The straight tread-plate is inset by around 14mm up from the base. The sides are approximately 11mm wide and expand at the basal end via a linear taper just before the tread-plate to form 26mm wide rectangular side-plates. The tread-plate is the same width as the side-plates. The suspension loop attached to the neck at the apex has entirely corroded away. There is a dearth of information available…
